Lumentum Shares Surge on Artificial Intelligence Demand Amid Valuation and Capacity Challenges

Shares of Lumentum have surged 135% year-to-date, significantly outperforming the broader computer and technology sector’s 16.5% return. The substantial rally reflects heightened investor optimism regarding the company’s growing role in artificial intelligence infrastructure, accelerating demand for optical connectivity, and improving profitability.

Lumentum’s market performance outpaced several industry peers, including Cisco Systems and Coherent, which posted returns of 45.3% and 27.8% respectively, while Broadcom shares declined 1.1% over the same period. Strong hyperscaler spending, increased adoption of 1.6T optical transceivers, optical circuit switches, and next-generation laser technologies have bolstered Lumentum’s growth trajectory.

Despite the positive momentum, financial metrics indicate that Lumentum shares trade at a premium valuation, carrying a Value Score of F. The company’s trailing 12-month price-to-sales ratio stands at 10.48X, exceeding the broader sector multiple of 5.57X. Lumentum also trades at a higher multiple compared to competitors, including Broadcom at 9.39X, Cisco at 6X, and Coherent at 3.9X.

Operational hurdles accompany the financial gains. Lumentum faces challenges in expanding its manufacturing capacity adequately to meet customer requirements. Tight availability of laser components and other materials could restrict shipments and delay revenue realization. To address these constraints, the company is expanding ultra-high-power laser production across its facilities in San Jose, the United Kingdom, and Greensboro.

Customer concentration presents another business risk. Lumentum relies heavily on a limited number of major customers, exposing its operations to shifts in purchasing patterns and capital spending priorities. The company’s two largest end customers accounted for 26.6% and 15% of fiscal 2026 revenues, respectively, representing a combined 41.6%. Furthermore, its expanding optical circuit switch business depends heavily on a single major customer. Competition in the sector remains intense, involving established suppliers such as Coherent, Broadcom, InnoLight, and Eoptolink, while the broader industry shift toward silicon photonics introduces additional challenges for Lumentum’s electro-absorption modulated laser business.

On the technological front, Lumentum benefits from increasing investments in artificial intelligence data centers, which require high-bandwidth and low-latency optical connectivity. The transition from copper-based connections to optical technologies is generating opportunities across scale-out, scale-across, and scale-up networking architectures. The adoption of AI accelerators and larger computing clusters is driving demand for the company’s lasers, components, and transceivers.

Adoption of next-generation 800G and 1.6T optical transceivers is accelerating as hyperscalers upgrade artificial intelligence networking infrastructure. Lumentum recorded record 800G shipments and initiated production shipments of 1.6T transceivers during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, with adoption expected to grow through calendar 2027. Additionally, the company’s optical circuit switch business represents a significant growth driver, as hyperscalers seek energy-efficient networking solutions that reduce power consumption and optical signal losses. Optical circuit switch shipments doubled sequentially in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, contributing to a first-quarter outlook that includes more than $100 million in optical circuit switch revenues.

Earnings estimates reflect positive revisions. The consensus estimate for fiscal 2027 earnings stands at $21.40 per share, marking a 0.5% increase over a 30-day period and indicating 146.8% growth from fiscal 2026. The first-quarter fiscal 2027 consensus mark is pegged at $4.22 per share, pointing to a 283.64% increase year-over-year.

Given the sharp year-to-date rally, analysts suggest much of the growth potential is currently priced in, limiting near-term upside. Lumentum currently holds a Zacks Rank of 3, corresponding to a hold rating, as investors weigh strong artificial intelligence exposure against premium valuations, customer concentration, and manufacturing constraints.
