Raptors and Magic Face Off Amid Extensive Injury Report Roster Shuffling

The Toronto Raptors are set to open the first of two home games this week against the Orlando Magic, with both squads grappling with substantial early-season roster setbacks.

The Magic head into the matchup missing several key rotation pieces, most notably star forward Paolo Banchero. Banchero sustained a low-grade right high ankle sprain late in the fourth quarter against the Minnesota Timberwolves, a development that will sideline him for four to six weeks. Orlando will also be without starting point guard Jalen Suggs, who suffered a mild bone bruise and right knee contusion late in the fourth quarter during the team’s first victory of the season against the New York Knicks on Sunday night. Suggs is set to miss both contests against Toronto.

In addition to Banchero and Suggs, the Magic’s injury report lists Jonathan Isaac out due to left knee injury management, Izaiyah Nelson sidelined for left ankle injury recovery, and Noah Penda out with a right partially torn hamstring.

Despite the depth challenges, Orlando received a boost regarding guard Anthony Black. Black missed the team’s morning shootaround due to personal reasons and was initially listed as questionable before being cleared as available for the game. Black is expected to absorb a large share of the point-guard responsibilities in the absence of Suggs. He opened the season with an 18-point performance against the Knicks, shooting six of eleven from the field with five assists and three rebounds across 25 minutes off the bench under coach Sweeney.

The backcourt and rotation shifts mean expanded roles for other players, including Jase Richardson—who logged six points over 17 minutes after starting Sunday’s game—and Tristan Da Silva, who has emerged as the team’s most efficient shooter so far.

The Raptors face their own notable absences. Forward Kawhi Leonard is sidelined for the next few weeks due to inflammation, swelling, and effusion in his knee, while center Nate Bittle remains out with a right foot avulsion fracture. With Toronto also looking thin in terms of depth, the team is expected to rely on players like Allen Graves and Jamison Battle to contribute through increased workloads as the two-game series gets underway.
