Ilhan Omar Faces Severe Backlash After Sharing Stage With Left-Wing Streamer Hasan Piker

Representative Ilhan Omar faced sharp criticism from political opponents and community organizations following a joint appearance with controversial left-wing live streamer Hasan Piker in Minnesota.

Ahead of taking the stage at an event hosted by socialist Minnesota state lawmaker Omar Fateh, Omar appeared on Piker’s livestream during a conversation on a green-room couch. During the broadcast, Piker remarked that the media tends to focus heavily on Omar and compared their political organizing to that of normal Americans trying to oppose the Trump administration. When Piker asked why the media fixated on her, Omar joked that they simply looked “really good on their screens.”

The event served as the inaugural episode of Fateh’s interview series titled “I’m The Host Now!”. Both Fateh and Omar are of Somali descent.

The appearance quickly drew widespread condemnation from Republican figures and Jewish advocacy groups, who pointed to Piker’s past controversial commentary.

John Nagel, Omar’s Republican opponent in her midterm congressional race, criticized the congresswoman on social media, highlighting previous remarks by Piker, including statements regarding the September 11 attacks and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Nagel characterized the appearance as an effort to normalize extremist rhetoric and demanded that prominent state Democrats publicly disavow the event.

Similarly, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas issued a statement expressing profound dismay over Omar’s decision to share a stage with the influencer. The group argued that elevating an individual with a history of hateful language represents a betrayal of Jewish residents and harms the wider public.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Lisa Demuth also condemned the appearance, questioning the judgment of Democratic leaders in bringing the streamer to the state shortly before the election as part of their closing message to voters.
