Kylian Mbappe Issues Formal Apology Following Geopolitical Backlash Over Mao Zedong Remark

Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe is learning that global brand management requires the same precision as a championship-winning goal. The 27-year-old French footballer has been forced into a damage-control campaign in China after an off-the-cuff remark during an interview triggered a swift and severe backlash from state media, commercial partners, and government officials.

The controversy stems from a recent interview on a French online talk show. When asked about his favorite internet meme featuring himself, Mbappe identified an image where his face was superimposed onto the body of Mao Zedong, the founder of the People’s Republic of China. In his response, Mbappe referred to the figure as a “Chinese dictator.”

The reaction within China was nearly instantaneous. Within 24 hours of the interview’s circulation, Mbappe became a persona non grata in the world’s second-largest economy. State broadcaster CCTV pulled Real Madrid matches from the air, while the athlete’s social media accounts were frozen. Major domestic sponsors, including the China Mengniu Dairy Co., moved quickly to sever ties and drop their endorsements.

The friction reached the highest levels of the Chinese government. A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry addressed the incident, stating that any words or actions that “hurt the feelings of the Chinese people” would naturally meet opposition across all sectors of society.

By Tuesday, the 2018 World Cup winner issued a formal apology on X, published in French, English, and Chinese. Mbappe described his comments as “ill-judged” and expressed regret for the offense caused. However, the apology may not be enough to recoup millions of dollars in lost fees and potential market growth.

The fallout has extended to the athlete’s Western business partners. On Holding AG, a Swiss sneaker manufacturer that recently signed Mbappe as a global brand ambassador to lead its soccer expansion, saw its shares fall as much as 5.7% in New York trading. The luxury conglomerate LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE, which represents Mbappe through its Dior and Hublot brands, is also monitoring the situation as it already contends with a broader slowdown in Chinese luxury sales. Meanwhile, Nike Inc., which recently ended its long-standing partnership with Mbappe, appears to have avoided the immediate financial turbulence.

To Western observers, the scale of the retaliation for an off-the-cuff remark about an internet meme may seem disproportionate. However, the incident highlights a deep cultural and political divide. In liberal democracies, satirizing political leaders is a routine exercise in free speech. In China, Mao Zedong remains a figure of singular importance. While his legacy includes the devastating Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, the ruling Communist Party views his status as the founder of modern China as essential to its own institutional legitimacy.

Furthermore, modern China remains highly sensitive to perceived disrespect from foreign entities, a sentiment often traced back to the “century of humiliation” by imperial powers. This historical touchiness has persisted even as the nation has grown into a global superpower, creating a minefield for international celebrities who rely on Chinese consumer revenue.

Mbappe is not the first global figure to tread this path. His apology follows a script previously used by American actor and wrestler John Cena, who faced a similar firestorm in 2021 after referring to Taiwan as a country. Other high-profile incidents include the years-long tension between China and the NBA following a tweet from then-Houston Rockets executive Daryl Morey in support of Hong Kong protesters, and the recent anger directed at Lionel Messi after he sat out a match in Hong Kong due to injury.

The geopolitical storm capped a difficult week for Mbappe. On Monday, he finished behind England’s Harry Kane for the Ballon d’Or, football’s most prestigious individual award. Following his win, Kane posted a message on social media advising, “Work hard in silence. Let success be your noise.” For Mbappe, the value of silence in the face of complex international sensitivities has rarely been more apparent.
