Federal Reserve Holds Interest Rates Steady as Lisa Cook Registers Historic Dissent

Federal Reserve officials voted on Wednesday to leave interest rates unchanged in a decision that produced two dissents, including a historic opposing vote from Governor Lisa Cook amid mounting political tension with the White House.

Only Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack joined Cook in voting against the majority decision to pause the central bank’s rate trajectory. Cook, whose future at the Fed has faced persistent pressure from President Donald Trump, had not previously dissented from any monetary policy decision during her tenure.

The rate-setting committee opted to hold rates steady just days ahead of congressional elections. However, policymakers across the institution indicated they are actively monitoring economic conditions for potential further tightening, noting that inflation remains well above the central bank’s 2 percent target at over 3 percent. Officials attributed the persistent price pressures to soaring oil costs and robust consumer spending.

In its post-meeting statement, the committee emphasized that it is taking time to gather additional economic data before determining its next policy steps. “The accumulation of more information will help the Committee determine the policy stance appropriate to ensure a timely return of inflation to the Committee’s 2 percent goal,” the official statement read.

The rare policy disagreement arrives at a delicate political juncture. Cook’s dissent is anticipated to escalate tensions with President Trump, who is scheduled to hold a White House hearing next week to deliberate on her status at the central bank.

Trump previously attempted to remove Cook from her post, but the Supreme Court blocked the effort, ruling that she had not received proper due process. The administration has since established a panel of officials to evaluate allegations of mortgage fraud brought against Cook by the president.

Attorneys representing Cook have firmly rejected the mortgage fraud allegations. They contend that the ongoing administration proceedings are part of a sustained campaign by the president to pressure the independent central bank into lowering interest rates.
