Alphabet Faces Wall Street Scrutiny Over AI Spending Ahead of Third-Quarter Earnings

Alphabet is scheduled to release its third-quarter financial results after the closing bell on Wednesday, arriving at a turbulent moment for technology stocks on Wall Street. Analysts surveyed by LSEG project earnings per share of $3.02 alongside $128.2 billion in revenue, a figure that would represent a 25% year-over-year increase and the fastest growth rate recorded by the company since 2021.
Despite the strong revenue projections, investor sentiment has turned skittish as markets grapple with the massive capital outlays required for artificial intelligence expansion. Alphabet shares declined in five of the previous six trading sessions through Tuesday, leaving the stock down roughly 7% for the month of October. In July, management raised its full-year capital expenditure forecast to a range between $195 billion and $205 billion, up from prior guidance of $190 billion. Concurrently, the tech giant posted negative free cash flow for the first time.
FactSet consensus estimates anticipate third-quarter capital expenditures to surge 130% from the prior year to reach $55.2 billion. Annual capital spending is projected to surpass $200 billion before climbing above $300 billion in 2027. Furthermore, analysts expect the company to post negative free cash flow of $2.27 billion for the third quarter, a deficit that forecasts suggest will widen over the subsequent four quarters.
Even as spending accelerates, heavy investment in data infrastructure is yielding gains within the Google Cloud division, which houses the company’s artificial intelligence portfolio. Analysts estimate cloud revenue will expand by 90% to $28.7 billion as Google captures market share from established industry leaders Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Competitors Microsoft and Amazon are scheduled to report their respective quarterly earnings on Wednesday and Thursday.
Alphabet has aggressively integrated its Gemini models and enterprise services while boosting sales of its proprietary tensor processing units, custom chips designed to compete directly with Nvidia graphics processing units. At the same time, the company’s foundational search business faces mounting challenges from emerging rivals including OpenAI, Anthropic, and an influx of autonomous agent applications.
In a research note published last week, analysts at Citizens maintained a buy recommendation while acknowledging shifting market dynamics. Google continues to hold a strong position across artificial intelligence initiatives, the analysts noted, while adding that execution risks remain alongside rising caution regarding search monetization amid increased competition from new agent technologies.
Company executives are scheduled to host a conference call with analysts and investors at 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time to discuss the financial results and operational outlook.
