Vice President Vance Urges Iran Security Chief to Address Nuclear Program in High-Level Outreach

Vice President Vance has reached out to Iran’s national security chief through a direct letter, emphasizing that any potential diplomatic negotiations aimed at heading off United States military strikes must include discussions on the Iranian nuclear program, according to a U.S. official.

The outreach directed to Mohsen Rezaei represents the most senior-level communication between Washington and Tehran in several months. The diplomatic message arrives as President Trump weighs the prospect of resuming major combat operations in Iran following the upcoming midterm elections.

According to the U.S. official, Vice President Vance proposed sending the correspondence to Rezaei, who serves as a high-ranking national security official in Iran and maintains a direct line of communication with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. While the official declined to disclose the exact date the letter was dispatched, President Trump expressed strong support for the initiative.

“The President was enthusiastic about the letter,” the U.S. official stated.

Efforts to relaunch formal bilateral negotiations face a significant impasse over preliminary conditions. Tehran has insisted that the United States must first lift its naval blockade, release frozen financial assets, and permit oil sales before any talks begin. Conversely, Washington maintains its position that Iran must commit to restarting nuclear negotiations prior to the granting of any sanctions relief.

Addressing reporters on Wednesday, President Trump offered a different perspective on the communication’s focus, stating that the letter was intended to facilitate the delivery of essential medical supplies.

“Basically, it’s getting supplies in to help people that are not well,” Trump said.
