Suspected Shark Strike Capsizes Kayaker off San Luis Obispo County Coast

A kayak fisherman narrowly escaped injury on Monday morning after a suspected shark struck and eventually sank his vessel roughly one mile off the coast of San Luis Obispo County. The encounter, which took place near Leffingwell Landing, left the fisherman’s craft with multiple punctures, forcing an emergency swim to the shore.
Emergency responders from the Cambria Fire Department were dispatched to the scene around 9:30 a.m. following reports of a capsize. According to officials, the fisherman was approximately one mile offshore when something struck the underside of his kayak with significant force. The momentum of the impact was sufficient to flip the vessel, throwing the man into the water.
The fisherman managed to resurface and climb back into the kayak, initially attempting to paddle toward the safety of the beach. However, he quickly discovered that the impact had left several punctures in the hull. As the kayak took on water and began to lose buoyancy, the man was forced to abandon the craft and swim the remaining distance to the shore. He reached the beach safely and was not injured during the ordeal.
Following the man’s arrival on shore, fire department personnel assisted in recovering the waterlogged kayak, along with the fisherman’s personal belongings and fishing gear.
Photographs of the damaged kayak were sent to Chris Lowe of the California State University, Long Beach Shark Lab for expert review. After evaluating the puncture marks and the nature of the impact, Lowe advised that it was reasonable to assume the vessel had been struck by a shark. Based on this assessment, Lowe recommended that warning signs be posted at the beach as a standard precaution for other ocean users.
While the fire department noted that shark involvement remains the primary suspicion, they have urged the public to exercise high levels of caution in the North Coast area. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid entering the water if there is visible shark activity nearby. Authorities also reminded the public to use emergency services immediately if any further threats are detected in the area.
Shark encounters are rare but have been documented in this region of the Central Coast before. A similar incident occurred in 2019 when another kayaker was knocked into the water by what was described as a large shark; in that case, the individual also managed to reach safety without physical injury. Officials continue to monitor the area for any signs of unusual marine predator behavior.
