Massive Explosion and Fire Strike Quaker Oats Plant in Cedar Rapids

Firefighters in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, were called to the Quaker Oats plant on Saturday afternoon following an apparent explosion that ignited a significant fire at the sprawling facility. The incident, which began late in the day, sent thick plumes of black smoke billowing over the downtown area as emergency crews rushed to contain the blaze at what is billed as the world’s largest oat mill.
Local authorities received reports of the explosion and subsequent fire at approximately 4:44 p.m. local time. Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames venting from the north side of the massive industrial building. The scale of the fire required a large-scale response, with the Cedar Rapids Fire Department requesting mutual aid from several nearby agencies. Firefighters from Marion and Hiawatha, along with personnel from Linn County, joined the efforts to battle the flames.
Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell confirmed that all workers at the plant were safely accounted for following the blast. In an update provided via social media, O’Donnell noted that the fire broke out in a portion of the plant where few employees were stationed at the time. She described the circumstances as a “blessing,” noting that the area was not heavily populated with team members during the incident.
By 6:25 p.m., the Cedar Rapids Fire Department reported that the bulk of the fire had been extinguished. However, crews remained on the scene throughout the evening, working inside the facility to monitor hot spots and ensure the fire did not reignite. Officials confirmed that no injuries were reported among plant workers or responding emergency personnel.

The facility is a major economic and industrial hub for the region. Owned by PepsiCo Foods US, the Cedar Rapids plant processes more than 2 million pounds of oats daily. While the fire was brought under control within hours, the full extent of the structural damage to the milling facility remains unknown.
The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined. PepsiCo has stated that a full investigation into the incident will be conducted to identify the source of the blast and assess the damage to the production areas. Local fire investigators also remain on-site to examine the area where the fire originated.
