Rick Pitino and St. John’s Ready for High-Stakes Season

Head coach Rick Pitino enters a new college basketball campaign with a roster that has already captured national attention, earning a No. 13 ranking in the Associated Press preseason top-25 poll. The preseason recognition marks the second consecutive season the program has opened inside the top 15, a feat the Johnnies have not accomplished since the 1990-91 season.
Despite the lofty expectations, the team is still navigating the foundational stages of chemistry. The roster has only been fully assembled since September, with late arrivals Keyshawn Hall and Indiana transfer Reed Bailey joining the program in late August. With only two significant contributors returning from last year’s rotation—guard Ian Jackson and forward Ruben Prey—Pitino is actively learning his personnel while his players absorb a complex tactical system.

Speaking at a recent press conference, Pitino highlighted the unique skill sets distributed throughout the locker room. He praised Quinn Ellis as one of the smartest point guards he has directed, expressed enthusiasm for Jackson’s ongoing development, and described Hall as one of the elite scorers he has evaluated. The Hall of Fame coach also pointed to the upward trajectory of Babacar Sane and noted that Hungarian newcomer Zsombor Maronka has yet to fully display his top-25 capabilities on the floor.
“It’s a fun group because they’re all so different in skills and there’s nobody that’s similar,” Pitino told reporters. “These two guys are the direct opposites of each other in the way they play. So it’s fun coaching so much of a variety in talent.”
Comparing the atmosphere to the previous year, Pitino noted that the current roster matches the camaraderie of his past squad while offering distinct tactical possibilities. With significant talent on paper and considerable ground to cover before reaching peak execution, the Johnnies prepare to navigate early growing pains as they aim to validate their preseason standing.
