Michael Douglas Offers Rare Insight Into Retired Icon Jack Nicholson

Actor Michael Douglas has provided a rare glimpse into the private life of his longtime friend and legendary colleague, Jack Nicholson, assuring fans that the reclusive icon is doing well away from the spotlight. Douglas shared the update during an appearance in Swansea, Wales, where he was promoting his recent memoir, “One Helluva Ride.”
While the two actors never shared the screen as castmates, Douglas famously produced Nicholson’s 1975 breakout drama, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” Reflecting on their professional relationship, Douglas expressed a lingering regret: “I would have liked to have acted with Jack.”
Addressing Nicholson’s current lifestyle, Douglas offered reassurance about the three-time Oscar winner’s well-being. “He’s not working any more. He’s well. He has disappeared. I know that,” Douglas told the audience, later adding that he still manages to see his friend. “I still see him, but he is fine. He is up there by his house and walking around in his slippers. It happens. He deserves it. I understand. He is a few years older than me, but I understand.”
Nicholson, who is now 89 years old, never issued an official retirement statement, but his last feature film appearance was in the 2010 romantic comedy “How Do You Know.” Since stepping back from the film industry, he has made only a handful of public appearances.

Public sightings of the actor have been extremely rare in recent years. In April, Nicholson’s daughter, Lorraine, shared a rare glimpse of her father relaxing alongside singer Joni Mitchell to mark his milestone birthday on an Instagram Story. That same social media post included a nostalgic throwback image of a younger Nicholson flashing his signature grin while holding a cigar and wearing a red vintage t-shirt.
Prior to that family snapshot, Nicholson made a surprise appearance in 2025 during the 50th-anniversary special of “Saturday Night Live,” sitting in the audience beside Lorraine to introduce his former “Anger Management” co-star Adam Sandler. Before that television appearance, he was spotted courtside in May 2023 at the NBA Playoffs Western Conference Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Denver Nuggets—a notable return for a celebrity who was once a permanent fixture at Lakers home games over the decades.
