Malachi Toney Surpasses Hall of Famer Andre Johnson on Miami Receiving List

Malachi Toney secured his place among the legends of the Miami Hurricanes receiving corps on Saturday, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer Andre Johnson on the program’s career yardage list. Toney’s milestone came during a productive outing in Miami’s 43-35 double-overtime victory over Florida State, where he served as a primary engine for the Hurricanes’ offense.

Toney finished the rivalry game with 11 receptions for 154 yards and two touchdowns. The performance brought his career total to 1,969 receiving yards, moving him into 11th place in Miami history. In the process, he eclipsed the mark set by Andre Johnson, who finished his collegiate career with 1,831 yards, now 14th on the all-time list. Johnson, a cornerstone of the Hurricanes’ early 2000s dominance, produced the bulk of his statistics in 2001 and 2002 after playing behind NFL greats Santana Moss and Reggie Wayne during his freshman season in 2000.

Beyond yardage, Toney continues to climb several other statistical leaderboards at Miami. He currently ranks fifth in school history with 159 career receptions and ninth in career touchdown catches with 18. His current trajectory suggests a significant reshuffling of the record books by the time his tenure in Coral Gables concludes. Projections indicate that by the end of the 2026 regular season, Toney is positioned to challenge the school’s career records for both receptions and receiving yards. He also remains within striking distance of the career touchdown mark.

The benchmarks for those records remain high. Xavier Restrepo currently holds the Miami career records for both receptions and receiving yards, with 200 catches and 2,844 yards, respectively. The career record for receiving touchdowns is held by Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin, who caught 26 scores during his time with the Hurricanes.

While Johnson remains higher on the touchdown list—ranking seventh in program history with 20 career scores—Toney’s volume of catches has already far surpassed Johnson’s career total of 92 receptions. As Toney continues his junior campaign and looks toward the 2026 season, he remains one of the most prolific targets in a program long known as a pipeline for elite wide receiver talent.
