Aston Villa Ends Manchester City’s Perfect Start as Nicolas Jackson Scores Twice

Manchester City’s flawless start to the Premier League season reached an abrupt conclusion on Saturday as Aston Villa secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Villa Park. The result ended City’s seven-match winning streak and continued a difficult run of form for the defending champions at the Birmingham stadium, where they have now suffered defeats in four consecutive seasons.

City manager Enzo Maresca, who had made history by becoming the first manager to win his first seven Premier League games in charge of a new club, saw his tactical solutions fall short against a resurgent Villa side. The hosts took an early lead just six minutes into the match through Nicolas Jackson, who capitalized on a significant defensive error by Marc Guehi. Guehi’s heavy touch allowed Jackson to seize possession, cut inside Elliott Anderson, and fire a high strike past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Despite the early setback, City controlled much of the first half but were repeatedly frustrated by Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Suzuki produced a series of high-level saves to preserve the lead, denying Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov. City’s misfortune was compounded when Ndiaye’s effort struck the woodwork.

The pressure from the visitors finally translated into a goal in the 52nd minute. Erling Haaland met a cross from Ndiaye with a powerful header to record his 13th goal in 10 appearances this season. The momentum appeared to shift entirely in City’s favor shortly after the equalizer when Josko Gvardiol unleashed a blistering drive, but Suzuki managed to turn the shot onto the crossbar.

Villa responded to the pressure in the 60th minute. Ibrahim Mbaye was played behind the City defensive line and delivered a cross for Jackson. The forward’s low effort found its way past Donnarumma, a shot the Italian international goalkeeper was expected to save. The brace marked a significant milestone for Jackson and reflected the continued transformation of the squad under Unai Emery.

Emery’s side has undergone considerable turnover since his arrival four years ago, with the club moving from a mid-table position to a Champions League contender. During the most recent transfer window, the club saw six players from last season’s Europa League starting XI depart. However, the recruitment of Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi has begun to yield results following an inconsistent start to the current campaign.

For Manchester City, the defeat comes amid ongoing off-field uncertainty. The club is currently appealing a guilty verdict involving over 100 charges of financial rule-breaking between 2009 and 2018. While the club faces potential sanctions that could include relegation, the first seven games of the season had suggested that Maresca’s squad remained focused on the pitch. Saturday’s loss, however, leaves the door open for Arsenal to move level on points at the top of the table if they defeat Everton later this evening.

With this victory, Aston Villa has now won six of their last seven matches across all competitions, moving up to sixth place in the Premier League standings.
