Katie Boulter Races Into Japan Open Quarter-Finals With Dominant Win Over Golubic

Katie Boulter delivered a commanding performance at the Japan Open on Wednesday, defeating Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic in less than an hour to secure her place in the quarter-finals. The victory in Osaka marks a significant turnaround for the eighth-seeded Briton, who is now poised to reclaim her position as the highest-ranked women’s player in the United Kingdom.

Boulter’s 6-2, 6-1 triumph was defined by a ruthless middle stretch. After facing early pressure and saving a break point in the opening game, the match remained competitive through the first four games. However, with the score level at 2-2, Boulter took complete control of the encounter. She reeled off nine consecutive games to seize the first set and build a massive lead in the second. Golubic managed to hold serve late in the match to avoid a second-set shutout, but Boulter closed out the contest shortly thereafter.

The conditions at the outdoor venue proved challenging, with strong winds impacting ball flight and timing. Boulter identified her mental discipline as a decisive factor in managing the environment.

“I think one of the biggest things for me is staying patient in the wind,” Boulter said following the match. “Sometimes I can get a little frustrated, and I’m very pleased that I didn’t allow that to affect me today and I think I ended up playing some really good tennis in the second set. I’m really pleased with the performance.”

The win carries weight beyond the tournament bracket. Having lost the British number-one ranking to Sonay Kartal earlier this week, Boulter’s advancement in Osaka ensures she will return to the top spot when the rankings are next updated. She now prepares to face either American Kayla Day or Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic in the next round.

While Boulter celebrated success in Japan, it was a more difficult day for British tennis in Europe. Jacob Fearnley missed out on a quarter-final berth at the European Open, falling to Frenchman Clement Chidekh in straight sets. Fearnley pushed the first set to a tiebreak but ultimately lost 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 in the Brussels-based competition.
