Booker Dismisses Reports of Alaska Spoiler Candidate Strategy as Political Distraction

Appearing on a Wednesday television broadcast, Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) dismissed recent reporting that Democratic campaign aides attempted to recruit a spoiler candidate sharing the name of Senator Dan Sullivan (R-AK) in an effort to siphon votes. Booker characterized the controversy as “much ado about nothing” and alleged it represents an effort by Donald Trump to cast a shadow over what he described as a potential electoral defeat.
The discussion followed reporting that staff members at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee assisted in recruiting spoiler candidates in Alaska aimed at splitting the incumbent Republican senator’s voting base. Both the campaign of Representative Mary Peltola and the DSCC have denied the allegations.
When co-host Boris Sanchez pressed whether the DSCC should initiate an internal review and whether such tactics are acceptable, Booker declined to validate the premise, instead pointing to remarks by Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).
According to Booker, Murkowski has noted that the matter was previously resolved by the Alaska Supreme Court and asserted that the U.S. Department of Justice under the Trump administration lacks legal standing to intervene. Booker added that he examined the ballot personally and found no reason to believe voters would be confused.
“It clearly says that Dan Sullivan is the Republican candidate,” Booker said, arguing that allegations of voter confusion ultimately insult the electorate.
