Matisse Thybulle Finds Immediate Fit and Clear Role With Lakers

Entering free agency as an established perimeter defender, Matisse Thybulle signed a minimum contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, providing the franchise with vital defensive depth on the wing despite his known offensive limitations. With the roster welcoming nine new players this season, head coach JJ Redick has faced the ongoing task of sorting out rotations and establishing player roles.

For Thybulle, however, that transition has been notably smooth. The two-time All-Defensive player has found a clearly defined assignment that leverages his defensive capabilities, allowing him to settle in quickly.

“Yeah, I think it’s extremely clear. Almost to the point where it doesn’t even need to be said,” Thybulle said following the team’s victory on Friday. “I think we all know as players what our strengths are and I think for a lot of us this team has created a landscape where naturally our strengths are what is highlighted and expected of us and just stick with that.”

Early-season injuries across the roster elevated Thybulle into a starting assignment. In that expanded capacity, he has focused on his defensive instincts, utilizing his ability to read passing lanes and operate effectively in a free-safety role. Now in his eighth year in the league, the forward has expressed appreciation for a coaching staff that accepts his established skillset rather than attempting to reshape his game.

“I think more than anything, just being valued for your skillset and have that be the thing that is wanted,” Thybulle said. “As opposed to a team trying to turn you into something else, especially now, just being year eight in my career. I feel like I know myself as a player and also seeing that reflected from the coaching staff and my teammates is nice.”

Moving to a new franchise typically introduces uncertainty due to differing coaching philosophies. Yet Redick has streamlined Thybulle’s responsibilities by utilizing him to pick up opposing guards full court, relying on his high defensive IQ, and positioning him to provide spacing in the corners on offense.

That approach yielded tangible results in a victory over the L.A. Clippers, where the 29-year-old forward delivered his strongest performance in a Lakers uniform to date. He contributed 13 points, shooting 5-of-8 from the floor, including a 3-of-6 performance from beyond the 3-point arc, alongside two steals.

Beyond game nights, Thybulle benefits from practicing against dynamic playmakers such as Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. The veteran forward noted that competing against such high-level talent in practice sharpens his own defensive abilities while strengthening the team’s overall wing depth.
