AT&T Settlement Payouts Approaching After Final Approval of $177 Million Class Action

Eligible AT&T Inc. customers impacted by two significant cybersecurity breaches in 2024 are moving closer to receiving financial compensation after a federal judge granted final approval to a $177 million class action settlement earlier this month. The litigation arose from allegations that the telecommunications company failed to maintain adequate cybersecurity safeguards to protect private customer data.

The security incidents unfolded across two separate announcements in 2024. On March 30, the company disclosed that a data set containing customer information had appeared on the dark web. Several months later, on July 12, AT&T reported a second breach involving the unauthorized downloading of limited data from an official workspace hosted on a third-party cloud platform. While agreeing to the substantial financial settlement to resolve the legal claims, AT&T has maintained a denial of any wrongdoing.

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas granted final approval to the agreement on Oct. 2. Implementation of the payouts remains contingent upon whether an appeal is filed, with the official effective date provisionally estimated for Nov. 12. Under the terms governing distribution, payments must be issued either electronically or via paper check within 60 days following the effective date.

Regarding eligibility and compensation tiers, individuals who submitted claims prior to the Dec. 18, 2025 deadline qualify for varying amounts based on their specific classification. Members belonging to the first settlement class who possess documented losses occurring in 2019 or later are eligible to receive cash payments reaching up to $5,000. Meanwhile, individuals categorized within the second settlement class, covering losses sustained on or after April 14, 2024, may secure payouts of up to $2,500.

As an alternative framework to documented loss claims, class members also retained the option to request a pro rata share of the remaining settlement fund. This alternative distribution occurs after deductions for settlement administration expenses, legal fees, court costs, and authorized service awards. Claimants seeking ongoing updates regarding the distribution timeline and account status can monitor developments through the designated settlement portal.
