Rising Star Zeynep Sönmez Continues Historic Climb in International Tennis

Turkish professional tennis player Zeynep Sönmez has established herself as a prominent figure in international tennis, marking several historic milestones for her country on the global stage. Born in Istanbul on April 30, 2002, Sönmez began playing tennis at an early age and quickly progressed through national and international competitions.

Her career highlights include reaching a career-high singles ranking of 74th in the Women’s Tennis Association standings as of July 14, 2025. Sönmez has captured one WTA Tour singles title and four titles on the ITF Women’s Circuit.

Sönmez’s team and international competition experience includes representing Turkey in the Billie Jean King Cup in 2022, where she recorded three victories and one defeat. In 2023, she represented Turkey at the WTA level during the qualifying rounds of the Rosmalen Grass Court Championships.

Her performances in Grand Slam tournaments have continued to break new ground. In 2024, Sönmez advanced to the final round of the Australian Open qualifiers and secured a spot in the main draw at Roland Garros, making her one of the first female tennis players from Turkey to feature in a Grand Slam main draw. Toward the end of 2024, Sönmez secured an impressive qualifying victory at the Brisbane International before claiming her maiden WTA title at the WTA 250 Mérida Open by defeating American opponent Ann Li. That victory propelled her into the global top 100.

During the 2025 season, Sönmez competed directly in the main draws of the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. Her run to the third round at Wimbledon marked a historic achievement for Turkish tennis, cementing her status as one of the sport’s brightest rising talents.
