Jake LaRavia Injury Casts Shadow Over Lakers’ Season-Opening Win

The Los Angeles Lakers tipped off the new NBA season with a commanding victory over the Golden State Warriors, successfully launching the franchise’s Luka Doncic era. While the night largely went according to plan for the home team, a late injury scare involving reserve forward Jake LaRavia provided the primary source of concern for the coaching staff.

Doncic, alongside teammates Walker Kessler and Austin Reaves, spearheaded the effort against the in-state rivals. The trio combined for 77 points, 21 rebounds, 14 assists, five steals, and three blocked shots. Defensive intensity anchored the middle frames of the contest, as the Lakers clamped down to limit the Warriors to just 35 combined points across the second and third quarters after surrendering 33 points in the opening period.

The most significant blemish on an otherwise successful evening arrived midway through the fourth quarter. With the Lakers holding a comfortable 33-point lead, LaRavia drove toward the paint against defense from LJ Cryer. During the play, Cryer impeded the drive, causing the 2022 first-round draft pick to awkwardly twist his right ankle and lower leg before falling to the floor.

LaRavia remained on the court, writhing in pain as team trainers rushed to his aid and eventually helped him back to the bench. Despite the alarming visual, LaRavia was able to put weight on the affected leg before heading to the locker room after being substituted out of the game.

Prior to the exit, LaRavia had translated a strong preseason performance into the regular season opener, contributing 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting in his minutes off the bench. Head coach JJ Redick praised the forward’s impact following the final buzzer, highlighting his consistent contributions to winning basketball.

“I saw him being himself,” Redick said. “Again when he is shooting with confidence and making catch-and-shoot 3s, that’s an added bonus. We have a group of guys that do a lot of things to impact winning that don’t necessarily show up in the box score, certainly won’t show up in a highlight reel on Instagram. He’s a winning player.”

While Redick did not provide a definitive medical diagnosis immediately after the game, he expressed a measure of optimism regarding LaRavia’s status when comparing his current outlook to the immediate aftermath of the floor collision.

“I’m probably more positive than when it first happened,” Redick said. “But again, he’ll be evaluated. And the next time I talk to you guys, we’ll have an update.”

Further updates on LaRavia’s timeline and the exact severity of the right ankle and lower leg injury are expected following medical evaluations by the team’s training staff.
