Decades Later, Wisconsin Fan Preserves Memory of 1982 World Series Game

For Dan Wilhelms, a dedicated sports enthusiast from Mosinee, Wisconsin, the memory of Game 5 of the 1982 World Series remains as tangible as the vintage ticket stub and seat cushion he keeps in his home. More than four decades after walking into County Stadium, Wilhelms retains the physical mementos of an era when local baseball history was unfolding.

Wilhelms’ journey to that pivotal 1982 matchup began long before the first pitch. Growing up with a deep passion for Wisconsin athletics, he followed the Milwaukee Braves during his teenage years before the arrival of the Brewers coincided with his high school graduation. His allegiance to the Brewers solidified during a period living in Chicago, a location paradoxically closer to Milwaukee than his hometown of Rib Lake.

When the World Series arrived at County Stadium, Wilhelms made the drive north from Chicago, purchasing a ticket for $18. The atmosphere inside the venue left a lasting impression. He recalls that the crowd noise was so overwhelming that verbal communication with his companion was nearly impossible, prompting them to stand through the majority of the contest.

In addition to the preserved ticket stub, Wilhelms holds onto a commemorative seat cushion distributed to the early arriving fans in attendance during the 1980s, noting that the item remains in pristine condition because he rarely used it. These keepsakes form a part of an extensive personal collection of memorabilia encompassing various games played by the Badgers, Brewers, and Packers, alongside a framed photograph of him in a Cubs setting.

As a new slate of games approaches, Wilhelms continues to follow his favored squads with enthusiasm from his home, expressing excitement for the unfolding postseason action despite attending fewer live events in recent years as a senior.
