Trump and GOP Condemn Democrats Over Alleged Spoiler Candidate Scheme in Alaska Senate Race

President Donald Trump launched sharp accusations against Democrats on Wednesday, alleging they orchestrated a deliberate candidate scheme in Alaska’s Senate race by recruiting a challenger who shares the exact name of incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan to confuse voters.

The president’s statements followed a published investigative report detailing how Democratic operatives and aides connected to the campaign of Democratic challenger Mary Peltola allegedly worked with party officials and political consultants to recruit a second individual named Dan Sullivan. Trump asserted that the maneuver amounted to an illegal effort to defraud the electorate and siphon votes away from the Republican incumbent.

Demanding immediate repercussions, Trump accused those involved of making false statements under oath in federal court, arguing that the participants committed perjury and that Peltola should face legal and political consequences. He further called for both Peltola and the second challenger to be removed from the ballot, maintaining that the incumbent senator should run unopposed by those individuals.

Representatives for Mary Peltola’s campaign firmly denied any involvement in the candidate recruitment effort. A campaign spokesman stated that the operation had no connection to either Sullivan campaign and emphasized that their focus remained on lowering costs and addressing systemic political issues in Washington. The campaign also countered by alleging that Republicans have a history of utilizing third-party spoiler candidates in Alaska elections dating back to the 2010 Citizens United Supreme Court ruling.

Meanwhile, the campaign for Senator Dan S. Sullivan criticized the challenger and her allies, arguing that the maneuver was a calculated attempt to deceive voters. Nate Adams, a spokesman for the incumbent’s campaign, asserted that Peltola, her senior advisors, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and national party lawyers colluded to run the scheme while repeatedly denying it to the public.

National Republican figures also condemned the operation. National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Tim Scott stated that voters would hold Peltola accountable for the reported tactics, expressing confidence in the incumbent senator’s re-election prospects. Alaska Representative Nick Begich echoed those concerns, describing the allegations as emblematic of deceptive political practices, citing coordinated spending, hidden identities during candidate recruitment, and conflicting statements provided to the public and the press.
