Trump Blasts Bill Maher in Record-Breaking 1,300-Word Truth Social Tirade

President Donald Trump on Sunday released his longest-ever social media post, a 1,322-word diatribe on Truth Social targeting late-night host Bill Maher. The president branded the “Real Time” host a “complete, total loser” and a “sleazebag,” while claiming the comic appeared to be in poor health during a recent White House visit.
The record-breaking post was triggered by Maher’s Friday evening broadcast, during which the comedian claimed Trump held the lowest approval rating of any midterm candidate in history. Maher also joked about a recent dinner with the president on October 15, comparing the length of the meeting to the short tenure of former press secretary Katie Zacharia.
Trump’s response represents a sharp pivot from comments he made to reporters just two days prior. On Friday, the president described the October dinner as “great,” calling Maher and fellow guest Stephen A. Smith “smart people.” However, by Sunday, Trump’s tone shifted significantly, as he accused Maher of citing “fake polls” and lying about their interactions.
In his post, Trump countered Maher’s claims about his popularity by citing CNN polling that allegedly placed his support within the Republican Party at 98% and 99%, an all-time record. Trump contrasted these figures with Ronald Reagan’s 86% approval rating among Republicans. He also referenced a CNN poll regarding the most popular figures in Republican history, claiming he led with 53%, followed by Reagan at 18% and Abraham Lincoln at 8%.
Much of the diatribe focused on two specific dinners at the White House. The first occurred on March 31, 2025, with Kid Rock and UFC President Dana White. The second, on October 15, included Maher and sports commentator Stephen A. Smith. Trump disputed Maher’s claim that the second meeting lasted four hours, stating it was closer to two hours and describing it as a “waste of time.”
Trump’s insults took a personal turn as he described Maher’s appearance and behavior. He claimed Maher “looked like hell” and described him as a “major pothead,” suggesting his lifestyle was “very bad for his health.” The president also alleged Maher was intoxicated during his White House visit, claiming he carried alcohol as he walked through the building. Furthermore, Trump accused Maher of using a “laughter machine” on his HBO show to manufacture audience reactions for material that Trump deemed unfunny.
The president also used the post to clarify reports regarding potential renovations to the White House. He explicitly denied rumors that he intended to convert the White House Briefing Room into a swimming pool, a joke Maher had referenced during an interview with Karoline Leavitt. Trump clarified that while he is considering moving the press to a different location to free up space, he has no plans for a pool in that area.
Trump also aimed his criticism at producer Chuck LaBella, a former associate of Maher’s who previously worked as a “gofer” on “The Apprentice.” Trump claimed LaBella had reached out repeatedly to facilitate meetings between the president and Maher, asserting that Maher was “desperate” to have Trump appear on his show—an invitation Trump said he would never accept.
According to data from Factba.se, which tracks presidential social media activity, this 1,322-word post is the longest among nearly 97,500 posts Trump has made since 2011. It surpassed his previous record—a 700-word post regarding South Korean investments—by more than 600 words. Maher has not yet issued a formal response to the essay, though he joked during his Friday monologue about his influence following the White House dinner.
