SK Hynix to Reveal Shareholder Return Strategy Amid Reports of Multibillion-Dollar Special Dividend

South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix has confirmed plans to announce new measures aimed at boosting shareholder returns on Wednesday, coinciding with the release of its quarterly financial results. The announcement comes in direct response to local media reports suggesting the company is weighing a special dividend of approximately 16 trillion won, equivalent to about $12 billion.
The speculation regarding a major payout emerged after the Dong-A Ilbo newspaper reported that SK Hynix was considering the substantial special dividend. According to reports, the potential payout would be funded by financial gains secured from the sale of its stake in Japanese memory chipmaker Kioxia. SK Hynix completed the stake sale earlier this year, though it has not publicly disclosed specific transaction details. Financial analysts estimate that the company recognized significant cumulative investment gains from the maneuver.
The original investment dates back to 2018, when SK Hynix contributed about 4 trillion won to acquire a stake in Kioxia through a consortium led by Bain Capital, which included participants from the United States, Japan, and South Korea. When queried about the media reports by the local stock exchange operator, SK Hynix issued a statement confirming that it is actively reviewing various shareholder return measures and intends to formally disclose them during its third-quarter earnings announcement on Wednesday without providing further elaboration.
The upcoming disclosure arrives as major artificial intelligence memory chip suppliers, including SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, face mounting pressure from investors. Shareholders have increasingly demanded that these firms return a larger portion of their excess cash reserves through enhanced dividends or share buybacks following a period of record profits driven by surging global demand for AI-related components.
This shareholder pressure intensified after the companies’ stock prices retreated from record highs reached in June. Market observers noted that the downturn was driven partly by growing investor anxieties regarding the long-term sustainability of AI infrastructure spending by major United States technology corporations. Amid these market shifts, SK Hynix shares recently firmed up by 0.5 percent, bucking a broader market decline of 1.3 percent.
The forthcoming announcement builds upon previous commitments made by the chipmaker to enhance shareholder value. In August, SK Hynix outlined plans to buy back and cancel 40 trillion won of its own shares, alongside a commitment to allocate more than 50 percent of its generated free cash flow between 2025 and 2027 toward shareholder return initiatives.
In addition to capital allocation discussions, SK Hynix recently adjusted its corporate strategy regarding external capital markets. The company announced that it has paused a planned United States stock listing for its Solidigm chip unit, attributing the decision to ongoing market volatility. That planned public offering had previously drawn scrutiny and concerns from both investors and regulators, factors that had weighed on the company’s valuation prior to the pause.
