San Marcos Rallies Behind Alum David Hamilton as He Reaches the World Series

The community of San Marcos, Texas, is gripped by baseball fever as hometown product and Milwaukee Brewers infielder David Hamilton steps onto the sport’s biggest stage. Friends, former coaches, and fans across the city are closely following every inning as Hamilton pursues a World Series title.
Long before playing under the bright lights of the major leagues, Hamilton honed his skills as a standout athlete at San Marcos High School, where he established himself as a dominant presence on both the baseball diamond and the football gridiron. Head baseball coach Bryan Webb recalls first noticing Hamilton’s rare talent when the future big leaguer was just 12 years old, practicing in batting cages with his father.
“You don’t get to coach athletes like him very often,” Webb said, noting that Hamilton displayed varsity-level ability even at a young age. By the time Hamilton arrived on campus as a freshman, his athleticism was immediately apparent. Placed at shortstop within ten minutes of defensive drills, he locked down the position for all four years and guided the Rattlers to their second-ever regional quarterfinal appearance.
Hamilton’s athletic range extended past baseball. During his junior and senior years, he also took the reins as the varsity quarterback. According to his former coach, Hamilton possessed a natural composure when games reached their most critical junctures, consistently demanding the ball in high-pressure situations.

Following his high school career, Hamilton chose to play collegiate baseball at the University of Texas at Austin after initially being drafted in 2016. During his sophomore campaign with the Longhorns, he batted .291 to finish second on the team and earned a spot on the NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team. The Milwaukee Brewers subsequently drafted him in 2019. After spending time with the Boston Red Sox organization, Hamilton returned to Milwaukee, where he now plays a pivotal role.
Back in San Marcos, the community views his journey as a source of immense local pride. A banner featuring his major league jerseys now hangs at the high school, serving as an inspiration for younger students walking the same halls. Colby Vidrine, Hamilton’s lifelong best friend, has watched the infielder navigate the inevitable trials, injuries, and challenges of professional athletics.

“He’s at the top of the top, doing it with the best of the best, and he’s thriving at it,” Vidrine said. “Just seeing the things he’s went through, trials and tribulations through sports, injuries, just trying to figure things out and always landing up on his feet. It’s really cool.”
