KC Current Eye Home Playoff Advantage After Securing Third Consecutive NWSL Postseason Berth

The Kansas City Current have secured their third consecutive National Women’s Soccer League playoff berth, setting the stage for a crucial final stretch as the club pursues a deep postseason run. Co-owned by NFL star Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes, the team clinched its postseason spot following the Portland Thorns’ 1-0 victory over the North Carolina Courage on Friday, October 23.
Kansas City, the Utah Royals, and the Portland Thorns each hold 47 points, placing all three clubs firmly in the playoff picture. For the ownership group, the achievement highlights the club’s continued competitiveness through a campaign marked by major roster changes and shifting player availability.
Head coach Chris Armas has navigated a demanding first season in charge of a women’s side, keeping the squad among the league’s top contenders despite the structural challenges. A defining feature of Kansas City’s campaign has been its dominant home form, which has helped offset more inconsistent results away from home. The team enters its final regular-season fixtures with a stellar 10-0-4 record at home, contrasted against a 4-1-9 mark on the road.
That home success forms the foundation of a historic streak. The Current remain unbeaten across 31 consecutive home matches, establishing a new National Women’s Soccer League record. The club aims to build on that momentum when it hosts the Washington Spirit on Sunday, October 25, in its final home match of the regular season. The fixture carries significant postseason implications, as a victory would strengthen Kansas City’s bid to earn a top-four seed and secure valuable home-field advantage for the opening rounds.
In addition to playoff seeding, the match serves as the club’s annual fan appreciation event. Organizers hope to draw 18,000 supporters to the stadium, which could set a new attendance benchmark for the franchise.
On the pitch, the Current’s success has been driven by standout individual performances. Forward Temwa Chawinga continues to pace the attack with 12 goals this season, maintaining her scoring impact despite missing stretches of matches due to injury and international duty obligations. Meanwhile, Croix Bethune has orchestrated the offense effectively, recording 10 assists to tie the NWSL single-season record, a mark she shares with Utah’s Cloé Lacasse. Across the entire squad, Kansas City has netted 50 goals this season, with 37 of those coming in front of home supporters.
Following the home finale against Washington, the regular season concludes on Decision Day on November 1, when Kansas City travels to face Racing Louisville, currently sitting 15th in the standings. All 16 league teams are scheduled to kick off simultaneously at 4 p.m. Central Time.
The NWSL postseason will officially commence with the quarterfinal round running from November 6 to November 8. For Kansas City, converting its strong home legacy into a favorable playoff seed remains the primary objective as the team chases a championship.
