Joe Burrow and Jared Goff Surge as Week 8 NFL MVP Contenders Take Shape

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has thrust himself firmly into the conversation for the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award following a dominant second-half performance against the Baltimore Ravens. After a difficult opening two quarters in Maryland, Burrow put on an offensive clinic, completing 16 of 18 passes for 249 yards and four touchdowns, resulting in a perfect 158.3 passer rating.

According to Next Gen Stats, Burrow completed 15 of 19 passes for 173 yards when operating from a clean pocket during the contest, illustrating the explosive potential of the Cincinnati offense when their star signal-caller is given time to work. Across the first six games of the season, Burrow relied on a quick release, averaging 2.57 seconds to throw—tied for the second-fastest mark among quarterbacks with at least 100 attempts—while averaging 7.4 air yards per attempt. In Week 7, however, those numbers shifted as he averaged 3.06 seconds to throw and recorded 8.8 air yards per attempt.

While the Bengals entered the current campaign attempting to incorporate more under-center formations and play-action concepts into their scheme, Sunday’s second half proved that traditional shotgun pacing can unlock elite production. Burrow was under center for only a single pass play during his second-half explosion, which culminated in a 16-yard red-zone touchdown pass to tight end Drew Sample.

Throughout the year, Burrow has maintained exceptional accuracy from the pocket, leading the league in completion percentage. While he has trailed front-runners in certain advanced metrics—ranking sixth in expected points added per dropback, seventh in success rate, and fifth in completion percentage over expected—his Week 7 masterclass against Baltimore signals that his ceiling remains as high as any player’s in the league as the race heads toward Week 8.
