Royal Caribbean Reroutes Bahamas Cruise to Chilly Canada Due to Stormy Weather

More than 5,000 passengers booked on a seven-day tropical getaway aboard Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas experienced an abrupt change of plans when their itinerary was redirected from the sunny Bahamas to chilly Canada.
The vessel departed from New Jersey on Oct. 18, carrying travelers who anticipated stops in Florida and the Bahamas. However, threatening forecasts of stormy weather off the East Coast prompted cruise operators to alter the route northward, sending the ship toward Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Passengers received notice of the revised itinerary just the evening before departure, leaving many with little time to adjust their packing or expectations for the voyage. New Jersey resident Marie Durning described the sudden shift to CTV News, noting her surprise at trading warm-weather attire for cold-weather gear. Daytime temperatures in Halifax hovered in the upper 40s to low 50s during the stop, with overnight lows dipping into the 30s.
While some travelers scrambled to find winter hats and scarves, others attempted to embrace the unexpected detour. Jim Matthews, a resident near Paterson, New Jersey, expressed appreciation for the chance to explore an unfamiliar destination, describing Halifax as a beautiful city after spending time ashore.

For other travelers, however, the northern redirection offered little appeal. Nicholas Meli traveled seven hours from Toronto to New Jersey with his family specifically for a warm-weather vacation, noting his disappointment at ending up in Canada.
The Oasis of the Seas spent approximately 24 hours docked in Halifax, allowing passengers to shop, explore the area, and take harbor rides before departing Wednesday evening. The revised schedule leaves the ship with three days at sea before its scheduled return to New Jersey on Sunday.

In response to the itinerary disruption, Royal Caribbean provided passengers with a 50% travel voucher alongside refunds for pre-booked shore excursions. Under the cruise line’s ticket contract and website policies, operators retain the right to alter or substitute ports due to weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances, without a strict obligation to issue fare refunds or compensation.
