Protests Sweep Major Italian Cities Under Heavy Security as Clashes Erupt

Demonstrations opposing war and the rising cost of living took place across major Italian cities on Saturday, accompanied by a heavy security presence and isolated incidents of violence. The weekend demonstrations followed widespread unrest that had erupted the previous week.

Authorities deployed significant numbers of police and Carabinieri officers to major urban centers, while many local shopkeepers chose to close their stores as a precaution against potential property damage. The heightened security measures were implemented after calls for further demonstrations circulated widely on social media throughout the week, prompting officials to make extensive arrangements to prevent a repeat of earlier violence.

Clashes between security forces and demonstrators were reported in Turin, Rome, and Bologna. In the capital, police and Carabinieri officers lined up outside the Colosseum as people joined spontaneous demonstrations against living costs that were subsequently blocked by law enforcement. In contrast, protests in Milan remained largely peaceful. Witness accounts noted that no shops were looted or property vandalized during the Milan demonstrations.

The unrest follows clashes last weekend in which protesters fought with police, looted shops, and vandalized property, particularly in northern cities. Earlier on Saturday, Italian police announced they had detained an individual allegedly linked to organizing the “October 17 Movement,” which spearheaded the previous weekend’s demonstrations. The detained person was taken to police headquarters in Milan for questioning as authorities continued their investigation into the coordinated protests.
