Gunman Targeting Minorities Kills One and Wounds Five in Paris Suburb Terror Attack

A gunman driving through the Paris suburbs of Trappes and La Verrière opened fire on passersby Friday morning in what French authorities are describing as a premeditated, racially motivated act of terrorism. The attack, which lasted approximately 15 minutes, resulted in the death of one man and the wounding of at least five others, including a 12-year-old girl who remains in serious condition after being shot eight times.

President Emmanuel Macron, following a meeting with local residents and officials, condemned the incident as a “racist terror attack,” stating that the victims were targeted specifically due to their skin color or perceived religious affiliation. The suspect, who was eventually apprehended in the nearby town of Coignières, allegedly utilized an automatic or military-grade weapon during the spree.

According to a chronology provided by law enforcement, the violence began around 10:30 a.m. local time. Witnesses reported seeing a gray Renault Clio speeding through the area as bursts of gunfire and loud bangs echoed through the streets. Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh stated the gunman fired at random but with the clear intent of causing a “bloodbath.” The shooter targeted people at three distinct locations, including a gas station and a local playground.

The rampage was halted by five officers from an anti-crime brigade. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed the arrest and noted that the suspect made statements suggesting the act was premeditated and driven by Islamophobic and racist motives. Prosecutors have since opened a formal investigation into “murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise,” specifically looking at whether the targets were chosen based on their ethnicity, nationality, or religion.

Among the casualties, the individual killed was identified as being of African origin. One of the wounded, currently in critical condition, is of North African origin. The 12-year-old girl, despite the severity of her injuries, is reportedly in stable condition. Mayor Rabeh described the fact that more people were not killed as a “miracle,” given the nature of the weapon used and the locations targeted.

This act of violence comes at a moment of extreme tension across France. The nation has been grappling with widespread riots and protests linked to the rising cost of living, involving labor unions, students, and members of the “Yellow Vest” movement. In response to the shooting and the ongoing civil unrest, Interior Minister Nuñez announced the deployment of approximately 70,000 law enforcement officers and gendarmes nationwide to maintain order through the weekend.

The suburb of Trappes has a history of high-profile tensions. It was previously the site of threats against a local teacher who criticized the state’s failure to protect Samuel Paty, the educator beheaded in 2020 after showing his class caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. Officials are now working to prevent the Friday shooting from further inflaming local or national divisions.

As a precaution, several major cultural institutions, including the Louvre Museum, have announced closures. The weekend program for Art Basel Paris has also been canceled due to safety concerns. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu emphasized that all resources of the judiciary and security forces are fully mobilized to investigate the shooting and prevent further violence. Authorities have warned they will be “absolutely uncompromising” with any further acts of looting, vandalism, or violence as the nation remains on high alert.
