Police Close Investigation Into Actor Hayden Panettiere’s Accidental Death

Police in South Carolina have officially closed their investigation into the death of actor Hayden Panettiere, concluding that the incident was accidental based on the findings of the medical examiner and law enforcement inquiries. Panettiere, widely recognized for her television roles in “Heroes” and “Nashville,” was 36 years old when she was discovered unresponsive on August 16 at an apartment complex where she was staying.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office previously determined that the cause of death was the toxic effects of multiple substances, including fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol, and queticine. Authorities confirmed that the examination revealed no signs of trauma contributing to the fatality, and initial police responses indicated no evidence of foul play.
According to the coroner’s report, Panettiere had completed a stint in a rehabilitation facility only weeks before her death, having openly discussed her ongoing battles with addiction throughout her life. Brian Hickerson, her on-again, off-again boyfriend, was present at the apartment complex during the incident and presented police with a bag of medication that he stated she had been taking.
Following the release of the coroner’s findings, Panettiere’s mother, Lesley Vogel, defended her daughter’s dedication to overcoming her struggles. Vogel described her as a fighter whose repeated attempts at treatment demonstrated a strong resolve to achieve a healthy lifestyle, while noting that she had never heard her daughter mention fentanyl.
Panettiere began her career as a child actor before securing prominent roles in feature films such as “Remember the Titans,” “Ice Princess,” and “Bring It On: All or Nothing.” In her memoir, she chronicled the personal challenges that began after the 2014 birth of her daughter with Wladimir Klitschko, a Ukrainian heavyweight boxing champion. She wrote about turning to heavy drinking to manage postpartum depression and the distance in her relationship, ultimately leading her to check into rehab and transfer custody of her child to Klitschko in 2018. She also addressed in her book the profound grief she experienced following the 2023 death of her brother, Jansen Panettiere, from an undiagnosed heart condition.
