OpenAI’s GPT-6.1 Terra Becomes Generally Available Across GitHub Copilot Platforms

OpenAI’s latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-6.1 Terra, has achieved general availability within GitHub Copilot. Engineered specifically for everyday agentic coding and terminal operations, the new model enters the platform at a cost point lower than that of GPT-6.1 Sol while expanding capability for automated development workflows.

According to early testing data, GPT-6.1 Terra successfully resolved a noticeably higher volume of terminal and C# coding assignments compared to its predecessor, the GPT-5.6 Terra model. The architecture is optimized to execute tasks in focused, consolidated steps, making it well-suited for well-scoped programming challenges.

The deployment spans a wide array of development environments and interfaces. Users subscribed to Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise tiers can access the model directly through the model picker interface. Supported platforms include Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, Xcode, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse, the Copilot CLI, the GitHub Copilot cloud agent, the GitHub Copilot application, github.com, and GitHub Mobile applications for both iOS and Android.

Because the rollout is proceeding gradually, certain users may experience a brief delay before the option appears in their respective interfaces. Pricing for the new model follows provider list rates under standard usage-based billing structures.

For organizational accounts, management controls are built directly into administrative settings. Copilot Enterprise and Copilot Business plan administrators retain the authority to configure access to GPT-6.1 Terra via model policies. Under default platform configurations, newly released models are automatically enabled unless an administrator has explicitly disabled the global default setting or toggled off access to this specific model.
