Milwaukee Four-Year-Old Killed in Accidental Shooting by Six-Year-Old Brother

A quiet Saturday morning in Milwaukee turned into a scene of profound grief as a four-year-old girl was accidentally shot and killed by her six-year-old brother. The incident, which has left a local family devastated and first responders shaken, occurred while the children were reportedly playing a game.
The tragedy unfolded around 9 a.m. on Saturday in a residence located on the 2700 block of North 53rd Street. According to authorities, Jurnee Scales Walker was playing with her six-year-old brother when the boy discovered a firearm and discharged it. The siblings had reportedly been playing “cops and robbers” when they gained access to the weapon. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene immediately, but Jurnee was pronounced dead upon their arrival.
The emotional weight of the scene was evident to those in the neighborhood. Rodney Mckinney, a resident on North 53rd Street who witnessed the aftermath, described the somber atmosphere as police and medical teams arrived. Mckinney noted that the gravity of the situation was clear when he saw a responding officer exit the home in tears.
In the wake of the shooting, a 16-year-old male, who has been identified as another sibling of the victim, was taken into custody. He has been charged in Milwaukee’s juvenile court system with possession of a firearm. Law enforcement officials are currently investigating how the teenager came to be in possession of the handgun and why it was accessible to the younger children.
Amya Burton-Lewis, a cousin of Jurnee, spoke of the young girl’s sweet nature, stating that there was “nobody like” the four-year-old. Burton-Lewis expressed disbelief over the incident, noting that the family believed the firearm had been stored securely. She lamented that a tragic accident is now how the public will remember the young girl.
Milwaukee police are utilizing this tragedy to emphasize the critical importance of firearm safety. Officials are urging all gun owners to ensure that weapons are stored in locked containers, out of the sight and reach of children, to prevent similar occurrences. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the origin of the weapon remains ongoing as the community mourns the loss of a young life.
