Cobolli Faces Dimitrov and Alcaraz Meets Khachanov in Vienna First Round

The Erste Bank Open in Vienna features a star-studded opening round as six of the top ten players in the world take to the Austrian courts amid high-stakes positioning for the upcoming ATP Finals. Tuesday’s schedule presents two compelling matches on paper, featuring rising star Flavio Cobolli against veteran Grigor Dimitrov, and seven-time tour champion Karen Khachanov testing world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz in his tournament return.

Flavio Cobolli enters the tournament at a career-high ranking of No. 6 in the world, following a standout season that includes an Acapulco title and a run to the Roland Garros final. However, the Italian arrives in Vienna fresh off a difficult three-set defeat to Lorenzo Musetti in the Lyon semifinals on Saturday, where he squandered four match points in a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 loss. Cobolli holds a modest 2-4 record on indoor hard courts this year and has historically exited Vienna in the second round in both 2024 and 2025.

Across the net stands Grigor Dimitrov, currently ranked No. 124 after a challenging 13-19 campaign in 2026. The veteran dropped out in the first round of the St. Tropez Challenger a month ago and sits a long way from his career-high No. 3 ranking. Despite his recent struggles, Vienna has traditionally been a fruitful venue for Dimitrov, highlighted by a semifinal appearance in 2022, and he retains the capacity to play above his current ranking.

This tournament opener marks the first career meeting between Cobolli and Dimitrov. Bookmakers list the Italian as a heavy favorite with odds around 1.50 or -200. While Cobolli’s indoor form has been shaky, Dimitrov’s inconsistent level leaves him vulnerable unless the favorite struggles with fatigue from his deep run in Lyon.

In another marquee first-round pairing, Carlos Alcaraz makes his first appearance in Vienna since 2021 as he kicks off his European indoor swing. Alcaraz recently captured his third title of 2026 by defending his Japan Open crown against Jiri Lehecka 7-6(4), 6-4, following earlier triumphs at the Australian Open and Doha after returning from a nearly five-month wrist injury layoff. Despite his success, a third-round exit against Zizou Bergs in Shanghai indicates the Spanish star is not completely invincible.

Standing in Alcaraz’s path is Karen Khachanov, a US Open semifinalist this season who presents a formidable opening challenge. Khachanov reached the quarterfinals in Almaty last week, falling to Alexander Bublik in a tight 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(5) battle after saving five match points in the previous round against Tomas Machac.

Historical data heavily favors Alcaraz, who holds a 6-0 lead in their head-to-head record. However, Khachanov has consistently pushed him, taking two sets across their previous encounters, including a first-set tiebreak in Doha in February before Alcaraz rallied to win 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. Their past meetings also feature tight contests in Rome in 2025 and Beijing in 2024, with the last two encounters both extending to three sets. With Khachanov possessing a dangerous indoor serve and Alcaraz playing his opening match of the swing after a five-year absence from Vienna, analysts anticipate a competitive battle where Alcaraz is expected to prevail in three sets at odds of 3.60 or +260.
