Marquez Wins Malaysian Grand Prix to Close In on MotoGP Title

Reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez delivered a dominant performance at the Malaysian Grand Prix, claiming victory at the Sepang International Circuit to push his championship lead to 44 points over absent title rival Jorge Martin.

Pilotting his Ducati machine, Marquez launched off the starting grid on Sunday and challenged his brother, pole-sitter Alex Marquez, into the opening turn. Although Alex Marquez briefly reclaimed the top spot, he ran wide at the following corner, allowing his brother to seize control of the race. Marc Marquez maintained his composure for the remainder of the event, securing his first Grand Prix victory in Malaysia since 2018 by a margin of more than four seconds.

The triumph elevated the seven-time world champion to 399 points in the season standings. With Martin sidelined due to a wrist fracture, Marquez now holds a substantial 44-point cushion. If he manages to expand his advantage to 74 points at next week’s Qatar Grand Prix, he could clinch his eighth premier-class championship title with two rounds remaining in the season.

“We did a perfect race, so I’m super, super happy,” Marquez said after the race. “But my mentality still cannot change. I have to keep focus, keep pushing. There are not many races to go, but there are many moments left. So we must be super confident.”

Behind the leader, KTM rider Pedro Acosta—who won Saturday’s sprint race—secured second place, while Gresini’s Alex Marquez rounded out the podium in third. After relinquishing the early lead to his brother, Alex Marquez engaged in a fierce battle with Acosta. The KTM rider shadowed the Gresini machine for multiple laps before executing an expert overtake at the race’s midway point. By that stage, however, the gap to the frontrunner had stretched beyond reach.

Further down the grid, Aprilia rider Marco Bezzecchi finished sixth. Bezzecchi, an outside contender for the title, slipped positions late in the race after being overtaken by Trackhouse competitor Ai Ogura and Tech3 rider Enea Bastianini.

Jorge Martin’s championship aspirations suffered a critical blow over the weekend. The Spaniard, who captured the title in 2024 and remains Marquez’s primary challenger, initially aimed to compete in Malaysia and participated briefly in Saturday morning’s practice session. Visibly struggling with the wrist fracture he sustained in a crash at Phillip Island, Australia, the previous week, Martin withdrew before qualifying and conceded that his title challenge was effectively finished.

The MotoGP calendar now shifts to the Lusail International Circuit for the Qatar Grand Prix next weekend. That event is scheduled to proceed despite reservations voiced by riders regarding travel amid the ongoing regional conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
