No. 11/12 Lehigh Returns to Patriot League Play Against Villanova

After suffering its first loss of the season and having a 23-game regular season winning streak snapped, No. 11/12 Lehigh heads down the Main Line to face Villanova on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. This weekend’s contest marks the first of five consecutive Patriot League games to close out the regular season and represents the inaugural meeting between the Mountain Hawks and Wildcats as conference foes. The two programs previously met in the second round of the 2025 Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, where Villanova secured a 14-7 victory at Goodman Stadium.

Lehigh enters the matchup carrying a 6-1 overall record and a 4-0 mark in conference play following a hard-fought 48-38 defeat at Cornell last Saturday. Despite the offensive output—highlighted by sophomore quarterback Derek Morgan throwing three touchdown passes and senior running back Luke Yoder rushing for 142 yards and his 13th touchdown of the season—the Mountain Hawks experienced an uncharacteristically difficult outing defensively, allowing their most points and yards since 2023. Prior to last weekend, Lehigh’s defense had surrendered only four touchdowns across the first three quarters of its first six games, but Cornell managed five scores in the opening 45 minutes.

Despite the setback, Lehigh still maintains top-10 rankings in the FCS across several key defensive categories, including rushing defense at 102.3 yards per game, scoring defense at 17.0 points per game, interceptions with 10, and total takeaways with 15. The team’s opening touchdown at Cornell came via a historic 100-yard fumble return by junior safety Luke Denny. After Cornell quarterback Garrett Bass-Sulpizio was stripped at the one-yard line by first-year defender Cayden Vassa, Denny collected the loose ball in the end zone and raced the length of the field, tying a school record originally set by Steve Smoke against Penn State in 1938.

Offensively, Lehigh has adapted well following the graduation of its top two receivers from a season ago, including Geoffrey Jamiel, who ranks among the top five in program history for career receptions and receiving yards. Quarterbacks have distributed passes to 12 different receivers through seven games. Junior Nick Palumbo paces the team with 18 receptions, 227 yards, and three touchdowns, while sophomore Anthony Feaster leads the squad with 276 receiving yards, having scored his first two career touchdowns against Fordham.

Villanova comes into the contest at 3-4 overall and 2-2 in Patriot League action after bouncing back with a 38-17 victory at Fordham following a bye week. Quarterback Pat McQuaide threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns while running for another, and running backs Isaiah Ragland and Ja’briel Mace each recorded first-quarter scores, bringing both players past the 400-yard rushing mark for the season. Defensively, linebacker Omari Bursey leads the Wildcats with 77 tackles. Villanova enters Saturday still looking for its first home win of 2026, having dropped home contests to William & Mary, Colgate, and Morgan State.

Saturday’s game marks the 21st meeting in the all-time series between the two universities, with Villanova holding a 15-5 advantage and a 12-game winning streak. Lehigh’s last victory in the series occurred in 2006 by a 31-28 margin. The Wildcats are one of two new associate members joining Patriot League football this year alongside William & Mary. Historically, Lehigh has defeated the last five newcomers to the conference in their initial meeting as league opponents, a streak that includes a 44-20 win over William & Mary on September 12.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3:32 p.m. from Villanova Stadium, with the game broadcast live on ESPN+ with commentators Sam Kuperman and Steve Pinone. Radio coverage is available on Fox Sports Radio 94.7 FM, 1230 AM, and LVFoxSports.com, featuring Matt Kerr, Mike Yadush ’93, and Connor Brown. Following Saturday’s contest, Lehigh will return home to Goodman Stadium for consecutive games, hosting Bucknell next Saturday for Hawk-o-Ween before concluding the regular season home slate against Colgate on November 7.
