Elite Runners Eye National Records at Upcoming Valencia Half Marathon

Elite distance runners gathered in Spain for the Valencia Half Marathon, where top competitors eyed fast times and potential national records on one of the world’s fastest courses.

Rodri Kwizera entered the race holding the fastest mark in the men’s field at 58:16, positioning himself as a leading contender for victory. Expressing his ambitions ahead of the event, Kwizera stated that his goal was to run faster and noted his enjoyment of competing in Valencia. A strong performance from Kwizera posed a direct challenge to Carlos Mayo’s Spanish national record of 59:39, which Mayo established in Valencia in 2023.

Competitor Thierry Ndikumwenayo reflected on his previous performance in 2024, when he clocked 59:42 despite lacking half-marathon-specific training. Entering this year’s race with targeted preparation, Ndikumwenayo expressed confidence in improving his time. He noted that Kwizera planned to push for a time under 58 minutes, while a finish around 58:30 would satisfy his own goals. Describing their relationship, Ndikumwenayo remarked that competing alongside Kwizera felt easier because they share a close bond akin to brothers, though that connection pauses once the race begins.

In the women’s division, Carla Gallardo arrived in strong form after breaking national marks, holding national records in the half marathon at 1:08:30 and the 10K at 31:11. Gallardo described her preparation as very demanding and noted that she had pushed herself to the limit throughout the season. Aiming to lower her personal best, she expressed confidence in finishing between 1:08 and 1:09.

Laura Luengo, who holds a personal best of 1:08:50, expressed excitement about returning to competition after a prolonged absence. Luengo identified Valencia as an ideal venue for her return and outlined a tactical plan to run alongside Gallardo for as long as possible, viewing the presence of her compatriot as a valuable opportunity to maintain a fast pace.
