FTSE 100 Advances on Declining Oil Prices as Markets Eye Major Budget and Fed Meeting

London equities moved higher on Monday, lifted by a retreat in global oil prices that helped revive risk appetite across broader market sectors. The blue-chip FTSE 100 index advanced 0.4% to reach 10,736.81 points by 1118 GMT. Meanwhile, the midcap FTSE 250 index rebounded strongly by 1%, positioning itself for its largest single-day percentage gain since October 9.

Crude oil values slipped by more than 1% during the session, though they remained near six-month highs amid growing hopes for a de-escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran. Brent crude futures continued to trade above $114 per barrel. The downward pressure on oil directly impacted energy equities, with the sector index dropping 1.8% to pull back from record highs established on Friday. Major oil majors reflected the decline, as Shell and BP shares fell 1.7% and 2%, respectively.

In contrast, the broader market experienced a widespread recovery. Banking shares rose 1.4%, tracking toward their largest one-day jump since October 12, while investment banking and brokerage issues advanced 1.9%. Aerospace and defense equities performed even more strongly with a 2.5% increase. Within that sector, jet engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce gained 2.3%, recovering some ground after suffering its sharpest daily drop since April 2025 on Friday following warnings from French rival Safran regarding slowing aftermarket sales growth.

Individual corporate updates also influenced trading. Computacenter led the top-tier gainers with a 10% surge after the technology services provider upgraded its adjusted pre-tax profit forecast for fiscal 2026. Additionally, 3i Group shares climbed 2.8% after portfolio company Future Biogas reached an agreement to acquire the remaining 49% stake in six UK anaerobic digestion plants for £104 million, equivalent to approximately $138.91 million based on an exchange rate of 0.7487 pounds per dollar.

The positive market movement occurs at the start of a busy macroeconomic and political week. Financial markets are preparing for finance minister John Healey’s inaugural budget announcement, with investors anticipating measures focused on bond market stability and clear guidance regarding government fiscal strategy. Attention is also fixed internationally on the U.S. Federal Reserve, which convenes for a monetary policy meeting on Wednesday. The central bank is widely expected to keep interest rates steady, though investors will comb the accompanying statements for indicators regarding future rate trajectories.

Domestically, economic pressures remain a focal point following inflation data released the previous week showing consumer price increases exceeding expectations. That report has solidified market expectations for an interest rate hike by the Bank of England in November. Investors and analysts will continue evaluating incoming corporate earnings reports to gauge how publicly traded companies are navigating complex geopolitical conditions and a shifting interest rate environment.
