French Leftist Mayor Calls for Media Bans Against National Rally Following Trappes Shooting

The far-left mayor of the Parisian suburb of Saint-Denis, Bally Bagayoko, has called for public speech restrictions and media bans against politicians from Marine Le Pen’s National Rally. The demands follow a recent shooting in the town of Trappes that left one person dead and five others injured.

Appearing on the broadcaster LCI, Bagayoko argued that the National Rally party should face sanctions over the incident. “I’m in favour of saying that those who make racist remarks all day long shouldn’t be given airtime,” Bagayoko stated, adding that politicians from the right-wing party should be censored whenever they make remarks deemed racist.

When questioned about how his own far-left party, La France Insoumise led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, would implement such policies if it gained power, Bagayoko outlined a two-stage approach. He explained that in the first act, they would fight the National Rally at the ballot box, while a second phase would see anyone participating in spreading hatred heavily punished, including within the media.

The mayor also endorsed a statement from the National Union of Journalists, which asserted that verbal violence and racism are worsening within French broadcast media and endangering citizens. The union argued that democratic debate must take place without trivializing what it termed a lethal ideology, and without treating racism as a standard opinion.

The push for media censorship emerged as left-wing politicians and initial reports claimed the Trappes shooter was motivated by racism and anti-Muslim sentiment. However, Olivier Christen of the National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office stated that while the suspect does not contest the core facts of the case, he denies the racist nature of his crimes. Christen also contradicted earlier media reports that claimed political leaflets were found in the suspect’s vehicle, stating that no party materials were recovered.

Meanwhile, Paris police prefect Patrice Faure has referred Mayor Bagayoko to court over allegations that he incited a recent wave of youth riots nationwide. Bagayoko has been a prominent supporter of the protests, having previously described the unrest as an understandable or legitimate response to law enforcement actions. The mayor has denied that his comments constituted an incitement to violence.
