Four Killed After Rare Localized Tornado Strikes Turkish Resort Province of Antalya

A powerful and “exceptionally localized” tornado struck a construction site in the Turkish Mediterranean province of Antalya on Tuesday, killing four people and leaving another injured. The storm, which occurred shortly after national weather officials issued warnings regarding heavy rainfall, leveled temporary housing for workers and toppled heavy machinery in the Kepez district.

Antalya Governor Hulusi Sahin confirmed that the fatalities included three Syrian nationals. Two of the victims died at the scene of the strike, while two others succumbed to their injuries after being transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. A fifth worker, who was located in a separate container at the site, sustained injuries but survived the event.

The tornado’s impact was concentrated heavily on a specific construction area, where it destroyed a shipping container being used as worker housing and knocked over a large crane. Governor Sahin emphasized the limited geographic scope of the disaster, noting that while the construction site in Kepez was devastated, other parts of the province remained largely unaffected.

Antalya is widely known as a premier international tourism destination, famous for its Roman ruins and expansive beach resorts. The region is currently preparing to host the United Nations climate summit, COP31, next month in a joint arrangement with Australia. Despite its reputation for sunny weather, the province periodically faces severe meteorological events, though fatalities from tornadoes are historically rare in the region.

The weather system that produced the tornado also brought torrential rains to Istanbul, Turkey’s most populous city. This follows a period of extreme weather across the country; earlier this month, Istanbul was hit by catastrophic flooding that claimed eight lives. Those floods, described as the worst to hit the city in eight decades, resulted in nearly 10,000 reports of property damage and infrastructure issues.

While tornadoes are not unknown along Turkey’s Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, they seldom result in loss of life. A similar event in February 2021 struck the resort town of Cesme on the Aegean coast, injuring 16 people and damaging boats and buildings after a crane was toppled at a construction site for summer villas.

Authorities continue to monitor the current weather patterns as recovery efforts at the Kepez construction site proceed. International travel advisories for the region typically highlight the risk of natural disasters, including seismic activity, urging visitors and residents to follow local emergency directives during extreme weather events.
