Flyers Host Blue Jackets for First Division Meeting of Season

The Philadelphia Flyers open a busy stretch on Tuesday evening by welcoming the Columbus Blue Jackets to Xfinity Mobile Arena for their first meeting of the season. The Metropolitan Division matchup, scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. EDT puck drop and broadcast on NBCSP, brings together two teams seeking early-season traction.
Philadelphia enters the contest with a 3-7-3 record after dropping a frustrating 5-4 regulation decision to the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday afternoon. In that game, the Flyers watched 2-0 and 3-2 leads slip away due to ill-timed turnovers and a rare off-night for goaltender Joseph Woll. Meanwhile, Columbus arrives having played the fewest matches of any team in the NHL so far, carrying a 4-5-0 record through nine games—seven of which were played at home. The Blue Jackets are coming off a 2-1 home overtime victory against the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday, where Adam Fantilli scored a decisive 4-on-3 power play goal in sudden death and veteran netminder Cam Talbot turned away 26 of 27 shots, including 13 stops in the third period. Denton Mateychuk scored the other goal for Columbus.
The matchup highlights several key storylines across both rosters, beginning with Philadelphia’s emerging young talent. Matvei Michkov matched a career-best five-game point streak following a two-goal performance against Anaheim, bringing his recent totals to six goals and eight points over that span. He will look to establish a new career high on Tuesday. Michkov has developed strong chemistry alongside linemate Porter Martone, who celebrated his 20th birthday on Monday. After a slow start to the campaign, Martone has contributed two goals and four points over his last four outings. Veteran two-way center Noah Cates has recently anchored the line in the middle at 5-on-5.
Special teams will remain a focal point for Philadelphia, which has scored at least one power play marker in each of its last four games. The coaching staff’s decision to shift Travis Zegras from the right half boards to the left side has revitalized the man advantage. Zegras has posted 10 points overall, with five coming on the power play, including one goal and four assists. Michkov leads the unit with four power play goals and one assist, while Martone has added two tallies and an assist. Defenseman Jamie Drysdale has chipped in a pair of power play assists. Overall, the Flyers rank 26th in the league with a 16.3 percent success rate on the power play, heavily impacted by an 8.3 percent start over their first eight games. On the penalty kill, Philadelphia ranks tied for 11th at 82.6 percent, while Columbus struggles on the power play with an 11.5 percent success rate, ranking 30th.
Goaltending duties for the Flyers will be split between Dan Vladar and Woll as the team plays a back-to-back set, traveling to Washington on Wednesday. Vladar’s overall numbers—a 2-3-1 record, 3.15 goals against average, and .900 save percentage—remain skewed by a difficult opening-night outing against the Pittsburgh Penguins when he had played less than one period of preseason action due to injury. Since then, the Czech goaltender has rebounded significantly, posting a 2-2-1 record, 2.38 goals against average, and .921 save percentage across five October starts. For Columbus, Jet Greaves has been uneven outside of a 31-save shutout against the New York Rangers on October 17, holding a 2-3-0 record with a 3.34 goals against average and an .884 save percentage. Talbot stands at 2-2-0 with a 2.82 goals against average and an .891 save percentage.
Columbus continues to rely heavily on offensive production from its blue line, anchored by superstar defenseman Zach Werenski. Although Werenski is still searching for his first goal of the young season, he has recorded a half-dozen assists in nine games and leads the team with 28 shots on goal, one ahead of Fantilli. The Blue Jackets are operating without former Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov, who is sidelined on Injured Reserve for the first time in his NHL career. Provorov is listed as week-to-week with a lower-body injury sustained while blocking a shot in an exhibition game on September 26. Former Flyers defenseman Emil Andrae has dressed in five of Columbus’s nine games so far, contributing two assists and a plus-three rating.
