Florida State President Addresses Struggling Football Program as Athletic Director Search Stalls

Florida State University President Richard McCullough issued an open letter to Seminoles fans addressing the state of the university’s athletic department amid another challenging football season. The communication comes as the team sits at a 3-4 record following consecutive difficult campaigns that yielded a combined 7-17 record across 2024 and 2025. In the message, McCullough acknowledged the frustration surrounding the program and reiterated the institution’s commitment to building lasting success.

“We are not asking you to ignore the results. We are committed to changing them. And we are not asking you to believe that everything is fine. We know it isn’t,” McCullough wrote in the letter, adding that the administration shares and embraces the high expectations of the fan base rather than asking supporters to lower them.

Despite acknowledging the severity of the athletic department’s struggles, the letter offered few concrete answers regarding immediate fixes, particularly concerning the leadership vacuum at the top of the department. Florida State fired athletic director Michael Alford on Sept. 14, installing interim athletic director Bruce Warwick to manage day-to-day operations while a national search for a permanent successor was conducted. More than six weeks later, however, the national search has still not formally begun.

McCullough explained that the university spent the past six weeks evaluating the internal structure of the athletic department and precisely defining the roles, responsibilities, and expectations for the incoming permanent athletic director. That delay leaves the program without permanent leadership as crucial decisions loom regarding the future of the athletic department and the football program itself.

The leadership void directly impacts head coach Mike Norvell, whose future has been a subject of intense speculation. Since capturing the Atlantic Coast Conference championship in 2023, Norvell has compiled a 10-21 record. The program followed a 2-10 finish in 2024 with a 5-7 record in 2025 and opened the 2026 campaign with three wins against four losses, including an ongoing winless streak on the road that featured a double-overtime loss against Miami.

Norvell’s name was omitted entirely from McCullough’s letter. Reporting indicates that the athletic leadership situation must be resolved before the university can definitively determine Norvell’s long-term future. With the regular season drawing toward its conclusion, the absence of a permanent athletic director raises questions regarding who will ultimately make the decision on the football coaching staff.

Financial constraints add further complexity to any potential coaching change. The athletic department carries more than $430 million in debt, the vast majority of which is tied to major facility investments such as renovations to Doak Campbell Stadium and the football operations center, and is supported by revenue bonds. Moving on from Norvell would incur a substantial financial penalty, with his individual buyout reported at approximately $47 million and total termination costs for him and his coaching staff approaching $68 million.

Concluding his message, McCullough urged supporters to stand behind the student-athletes and continue packing Doak Campbell Stadium for the remainder of the season. While noting that the players show immense commitment and effort, the ongoing delays in launching the search for permanent leadership leave fans waiting for tangible answers as the program attempts to navigate mounting financial and competitive pressures.
