Cleveland Browns Owner Jimmy Haslam Addresses Deshaun Watson’s Future Amid Strong Start

The Cleveland Browns have emerged as one of the unexpected storylines of the National Football League season, holding an outright lead in the competitive AFC North with a 4-2 record through six games. Yet, even as the team navigates early-season success, organizational leadership is declining to make long-term commitments regarding quarterback Deshaun Watson, whose contract is set to expire after this season.

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam addressed the quarterback’s status in remarks to reporters, stating that any discussions regarding a new deal or future retention would be “way premature.” Haslam emphasized that the organization’s immediate attention remains squarely fixed on weekly competition, pointing directly toward an upcoming matchup against the Tennessee Titans.

Despite the public stance from ownership, league observers note that various factors could influence whether Watson remains in Cleveland beyond the 2026 campaign. One unnamed NFL source suggested that the door remains open for Watson to stay with the franchise, noting that starting opportunities elsewhere could be limited and that teams selecting a rookie quarterback in the draft are rarely in a rush to thrust a newcomer immediately into the starting lineup. Furthermore, financial mechanics surrounding the quarterback’s current deal could play a significant role in future decisions.

Watson signed a five-year, $230 million contract in March 2022 following his acquisition in a trade with the Houston Texans. The current season marks the final year of that agreement, although his salary cap impact will persist through 2030 due to void years. Analysts point out that Watson is scheduled to count $86.2 million in dead money against the Browns’ salary cap in 2027. While the team could mitigate this impact by designating him as a post-June 1 cut before March 13, 2027—thereby spreading the dead money over two seasons—financial considerations and cap management might also present arguments for keeping him on a restructured or new contract.

On the field, Watson’s performance through the first six games has presented a mixed profile. While he has struggled in several traditional and advanced efficiency metrics, ranking 25th out of 33 quarterbacks in Total QBR, 16th out of 21 quarterbacks in expected points added per play, and 17th in success rate among quarterbacks with at least 200 plays, he has excelled in crucial late-game scenarios. Watson leads the NFL with 24 sacks taken and is tied for the league lead with six fumbles, but he also paces the league with four game-winning drives. Meanwhile, the Browns’ offense as a whole has found scoring somewhat difficult, surpassing 21 points in a game only once during the first six weeks.

Beyond the quarterback position, the franchise is positioned with substantial young talent and future assets. The roster features emerging players such as Denzel Boston, KC Concepcion, Harold Fannin Jr., Carson Schwesinger, and Mason Graham. Additionally, the team holds two first-round selections in the 2027 draft, bolstered by the trade that sent Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams. Based on current standings, the pick acquired from the Rams would fall at No. 11 overall.

For now, the primary focus for the organization is maintaining its position at the top of the division. Entering Week 7, every team in the AFC North holds a winning record, making the division one of the tightest in professional football. The Browns currently hold first place outright by virtue of head-to-head victories over the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens, marking the first time since the 2014 season that the franchise has held sole possession of first place in the division at any point during the year.
