Canelo Álvarez Challenges Christian Mbilli for WBC Title in Riyadh

Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez steps into the ring at Riyadh’s Kingdom Arena to challenge Christian Mbilli for the WBC super-middleweight title, entering a high-stakes championship bout as a challenger for the first time since 2022. The 36-year-old Mexican superstar is fighting for the first time since losing his undisputed championship to Terence Crawford 13 months ago, seeking to reclaim his dominant position at 168 pounds against an undefeated opponent in circumstances made extraordinary by ongoing regional security concerns.
The matchup proceeds against a turbulent backdrop after a wave of drone and missile attacks across Saudi Arabia forced the cancellation or postponement of several major events, throwing the fight’s logistics into weeks of uncertainty before organizers confirmed the show would go on.

Speaking at Thursday’s final press conference, Álvarez reflected on his two decades in professional boxing and his unfamiliar status. “After 20 years as a professional, I’m glad to be here,” Álvarez said. “I’m the challenger now, but always in my mind, I’m the champion. I don’t believe in shortcuts. I’m going straight for the champion because I already have the experience. I’ve been a champion for many years and I want to be a champion again.”
Across the division, the 31-year-old Mbilli is making the first defense of the full WBC title. The Cameroon-born Frenchman, who enters the ring undefeated, expressed total confidence in his readiness to defend his belt on the global stage. “I’m ready for this fight. I’m ready to shock the world,” Mbilli said. “I have a lot of respect for Canelo and I want to congratulate him, but on Saturday it’s going to be a different story. I’m coming for the win. My training camp was perfect. My mind is ready for this fight. I don’t need to do anything special to win; I only need to be myself.”

The championship headliner is supported by an extensive undercard at the Kingdom Arena. In the penultimate preliminary bout, Jaime Munguía defends his WBA super-middleweight title against Nikita Zon in a scheduled 12-round contest.
Earlier action saw Rafael Espinoza successfully defend his WBO featherweight title with a third-round technical knockout over Ricardo Blandon, who was unable to continue after suffering a cut above his eye caused by a punch in a stoppage some observers viewed as premature. With the victory, the unbeaten Mexican improved his professional record to 29-0 with 25 knockouts.

Japan’s Reito Tsutsumi delivered a dominant performance earlier in the evening, overwhelming Raymundo Rojas with a series of heavy left hands to force a stoppage at 2 minutes and 27 seconds of the second round, lifting his professional record to 6-0.
On the non-televised portion of the card, Brayan Leon secured a victory over Hector Aguirre by unanimous decision across eight rounds, while Emiliano Rojo stopped Flavius Biea in the fourth round. Bek Nurmaganbet needed less than three minutes to dispatch Marcos Vazquez, flooring him twice before sealing a first-round knockout with only three seconds remaining on the clock. Additional preliminary results included Sultan Almohammed earning a unanimous decision against Erick Villegas, and Carl Jammes Martin edging David Picasso by split decision in a tightly contested featherweight encounter.
