New Poll Details Voter Sentiment on California Governor’s Race and Ballot Measures

A newly released survey of likely voters across California offers a detailed look at public sentiment heading into the midterm elections, highlighting a decisive front-runner in the race for governor alongside tightly contested battles over several high-profile ballot measures. The research, conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California, surveyed more than 1,000 likely voters to gauge political preferences and opinions on key legislative proposals. Among the survey’s central findings is the trajectory of Proposition 40, frequently referred to as the “Billionaire’s Tax.” The data indicates that the measure faces an uphill battle, with 52% of respondents reporting they intend to vote against it. Support for the proposed tax is concentrated largely among Democratic voters, particularly those residing in the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to Proposition 40, the survey revealed that the electorate remains closely divided on several other prominent ballot initiatives. These include Proposition 39, which centers on voter identification requirements, as well as Propositions 41 and 42, both of which address state taxation policies. At the top of the state ticket, the contest for California governor features a clear leader. Democrat Xavier Becerra commands a substantial advantage in the survey, capturing 61% of support among likely voters and holding a lead of nearly double digits. Becerra’s strongest backing is drawn primarily from population centers in the Bay Area and Los Angeles. On the opposing side, Republican candidate Steve Hilton derives the majority of his support from voters in the Central Valley region. While the survey did not delve into individual races for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives or the U.S. Senate, it asked participants broad questions regarding their congressional preferences. Overall, 63% of surveyed voters indicated an intention to support a Democratic candidate in upcoming congressional contests, reflecting broader partisan leanings across the state.
