Bridgerton Season 5 Officially Wraps Filming Ahead of Scheduled 2027 Release

Production on the fifth season of “Bridgerton” has officially concluded, marking a significant milestone for the global period drama as it moves toward a projected 2027 release. The upcoming season, which serves as a landmark for the franchise by featuring its first queer female romance as the primary narrative arc, finished principal photography mid-to-late last week.

Filming for Season 5 began on March 24, 2026, and spanned nearly seven months of work in the United Kingdom. This production cycle was notably more efficient than previous installments; seasons one through four typically required between seven and eight months to complete. While some cast members, including series star Luke Thompson, had indicated that the project was nearing its end as early as October 20, official confirmation followed shortly thereafter. Final social media updates from the hair and makeup teams and other crew members on October 21 confirmed their last days on set, followed by a celebratory wrap party for the cast and crew later that week.

The new season will focus on the evolving relationship between Francesca Bridgerton, played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, portrayed by Masali Baduza. The narrative builds directly upon the foundations laid in the fourth season, which adapted elements of the Julia Quinn novel “When He Was Wicked.” In that storyline, Francesca was initially married to John Stirling before his sudden death in his sleep. In the wake of her grief, she found a unique bond with John’s cousin, Michaela—a character gender-swapped from the original Michael Stirling in the source material. By the end of the fourth season, the two had formed an intimate connection that will blossom into the central romance of Season 5.

The production team has indicated that the story will explore the most subdued of the Bridgerton children as she navigates a desire that matches the intensity of her siblings’ previous romances. The season will also feature a dark-skinned Black woman as the romantic lead, maintaining the show’s tradition of inclusive casting and representation within its stylized Regency world.

Beyond the core romance, Season 5 will introduce fresh mysteries and continue existing subplots. Following Penelope’s decision to retire from her role as Lady Whistledown, a new figure has assumed the moniker of the ton’s premier gossip commentator. The identity of this new narrator is expected to remain concealed from the audience throughout the entirety of the fifth season. Meanwhile, the series will continue to develop the burgeoning relationship between the Bridgerton matriarch, Violet (Ruth Gemmell), and Lord Marcus Anderson (Daniel Francis).

While a specific premiere date has not been confirmed, historical patterns suggest a release in late spring 2027. Previous seasons have typically debuted on streaming platforms approximately seven months after filming concludes, placing the likely arrival window over a year away.

The franchise shows no signs of slowing down following this production wrap. Work is already underway in the writers’ room for Season 6, which is slated to adapt the story of Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie) and her romance with Sir Philip Crane, with Chris Fulton expected to return to the role. Additionally, a new prequel series is in development focusing on the early relationship between young Violet and Edmund Bridgerton.
