Four-Star Forward Asa Montgomery Commits to Duke for 2027

Four-star forward Asa Montgomery announced his commitment to Duke on Wednesday, choosing the Blue Devils over a final group of contenders that included LSU, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, and UConn.
Montgomery, a native of Power Springs, Georgia, is rated as the No. 14 overall player and the No. 4 small forward in the 2027 recruiting cycle by 247Sports. The 6-foot-7 prospect completed official visits to all five of his finalists, concluding his tour with a trip to Duke over the weekend of Oct. 2-3.
The addition of Montgomery elevates Duke to the top spot in the 2027 247Sports recruiting team rankings, passing LSU, Indiana, Missouri, UConn, and Houston. He becomes the third commitment in the Blue Devils’ 2027 class, joining Luke Paul of Australia and Kager Knueppel, the younger brother of former Duke standout and current Charlotte Hornet Kon Knueppel.
Duke has maintained a dominant presence on the recruiting trail under head coach Jon Scheyer, who took over the program ahead of the 2022-23 season. The Blue Devils have secured a top-two recruiting class in every season under Scheyer, coming off three consecutive years with the nation’s top-ranked class.
Adam Finkelstein, Director of Scouting for 247Sports, praised Montgomery’s versatility and floor awareness, noting his defensive instincts and activity in international competition. “He has good instincts on both ends of the floor and a nose for the ball defensively,” Finkelstein said. “Even in FIBA competition, he showed an ability to get his hands on a lot of balls, rebound it well enough to match-up with opposing fours, and be switchable on the ball.”
Finkelstein also highlighted Montgomery’s readiness for collegiate play alongside his long-term potential. “What’s exciting about Montgomery is that he shows a willingness and ability to do the ‘little things’ that will help him get on the floor right away at the next level, but also has a clear upside,” Finkelstein added. Noting that Montgomery is very young for his grade and will not turn 18 until the July following his senior year, Finkelstein pointed to a long developmental runway for the forward to expand his scoring and overall skill set.
When he arrives in Durham, Montgomery may reunite with a recent summer teammate. The incoming freshman played alongside current Duke player Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje on the USA Basketball Men’s U17 National Team that defeated Serbia earlier this summer. Due to NBA age requirements, Montgomery is ineligible for the 2027 NBA Draft, meaning he will be required to play two seasons of college basketball before turning professional.
