Five-Star Center Lewis Uvwo Commits to Providence in Historic Program Win

Five-star center Lewis Uvwo announced his commitment to Providence on Wednesday, choosing the Friars over Baylor, Kentucky, and Cal during a live broadcast on CBS Sports HQ. Ranked as the No. 7 overall player in the 2027 recruiting cycle, Uvwo stands as the highest-ranked center and top big man in his class, delivering a landmark recruiting victory for head coach Bryan Hodgson as he enters his first season leading the program.

Uvwo, who attends the national powerhouse Prolific Prep in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, becomes only the third five-star recruit secured by Providence in the modern scouting era. He joins Kris Dunn and Ricky Ledo, both from the class of 2012, as the highest-ranked commitments in the history of the Providence basketball program.

Reflecting on his decision, Uvwo pointed to the relational aspect of his recruitment following official visits last month to Providence, Kentucky, Cal, and Baylor. What stood out to him were the people, the culture, and the consistent support he experienced throughout the process.

“I felt like they genuinely believed in me, not just as a basketball player but as a person,” Uvwo stated. “Providence has a great basketball history with room to create more history and go to heights never experienced at the school, and I welcome that challenge. I wanted to be somewhere I could grow, be challenged, and help build something special.”

The young recruit also highlighted the leadership of Coach Hodgson as a decisive factor in his choice. Uvwo noted that Hodgson distinguished himself through his coaching acumen, established winning background, and a transparent vision for the program’s future.

“Coach Hodgson separated himself through his craft and the fact that he has always been a winner,” Uvwo noted. “You can tell he knows the game, understands what it takes to build a successful program, and has a clear vision for where he wants to take Providence.”

Scouting evaluations emphasize the unique physical and athletic profile that makes Uvwo an elite prospect. Standing at 6 feet, 10 inches with a wingspan stretching nearly 7 feet, 6 inches, the 225-pound center combines massive length with exceptional fluidity, running and changing direction with high-level coordination. Observers note his remarkably quick reactions, capability for secondary jumps, and a high motor that pairs physical tools with continuous energy on the floor.

Under Hodgson, Providence has emerged as a formidable presence in high school basketball recruitment. The program’s rising standing coincides with broader financial developments in college athletics; in a breakdown of the name, image, and likeness landscape, Providence placed in Tier 4 with an estimated budget range between $12.1 million and $15 million, alongside conference peers such as Georgetown, Creighton, Villanova, and Marquette, as well as prominent national programs including UCLA, Ohio State, Baylor, and Alabama.
