Apple Intelligence Set to Launch Beta Testing in China

Apple is preparing to launch the initial testing phase for its artificial intelligence suite in China this November, featuring a localized partnership with Alibaba to integrate the Qwen large language model into core system experiences. Chinese users will gain access to AI-powered text understanding, image processing, and content generation tools embedded directly into Siri, writing assistants, and visual intelligence features.

The initial rollout encompasses translation, writing enhancement, image editing, email management, and notification organization. Real-time translation capabilities are integrated into Messages, FaceTime, and Phone applications to facilitate cross-language communication. Users can also utilize face-to-face translation via compatible audio accessories, including AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation, AirPods Pro 2, and subsequent models.

Content creation tools assist users by automatically rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing text, while a new generation feature allows direct invocation of Qwen within system-level writing utilities. Visual intelligence harnesses the device camera to identify surrounding objects and locations. In the Photos application, a clean-up tool removes distracting background elements while preserving image integrity, and natural language search enables rapid retrieval of media files through descriptive text queries or automated movie generation from simple text prompts.

Personalization updates introduce custom emoji creation via text descriptions, while mail management gains a priority inbox section highlighting urgent communications such as boarding passes or same-day appointments. Summary functions condense lengthy email threads, and smart reply suggestions streamline communication. Notification enhancements include priority sorting and a reduced-interruption focus mode designed to surface only essential alerts.

Audio and transcription utilities now feature automated summaries for Notes application recordings and phone call transcriptions. Siri receives significant upgrades, supporting text-based input alongside voice commands, enhanced context retention across multi-turn conversations, and advanced query handling backed by Qwen integration for complex document and photo analysis. Users can access these capabilities by logging into a Qwen account or using Sign in with Apple.

Apple noted that the initial Chinese release excludes certain next-generation features announced at WWDC 2026, such as expanded Siri AI capabilities. Supported hardware includes the iPhone 16 lineup and newer models, iPhone Duo, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. To operate the features, device and Siri languages must be configured to both English and Simplified Chinese, with feature availability subject to regional and linguistic variations.
