West Virginia Couple Charged After Children Endure Alleged ‘House of Horrors’ Conditions

A West Virginia couple is facing multiple felony charges after an extensive investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department uncovered what officials described as a “house of horrors” where three children were allegedly subjected to years of systematic physical abuse and psychological torment. Erica Lynn Sayre, 45, and her husband, Clifford Gale Sayre, 46, both residents of Evans, were arrested following a multi-agency probe into the conditions of their home and the treatment of the children in their care.

The investigation, which involved Jackson County deputies, West Virginia Child Protective Services, and a regional Child Advocacy Center, revealed a harrowing pattern of violence and deprivation. According to law enforcement, the children were repeatedly struck, strangled, and deprived of fundamental necessities, including food, water, and access to a bathroom. The allegations describe a environment of extreme sanitation neglect, with investigators asserting that soiled cat litter was dumped into the children’s beds and dog feces was placed on their personal belongings as a form of punishment.

Erica Sayre faces three felony counts of child abuse resulting in bodily injury and three felony counts of child neglect creating a risk of injury. Her husband, Clifford Sayre, has been charged with three felony counts of child neglect resulting in bodily injury and three counts of child neglect creating a risk of injury. While Erica is accused of being the primary physical aggressor, authorities allege that Clifford witnessed the ongoing abuse for years but failed to intervene. In one documented instance, a child claimed that Clifford restrained her hands while Erica used a razor blade to forcibly cut the child’s hair, resulting in a physical injury.

The children’s testimony provided to forensic interviewers painted a bleak picture of their daily lives. One child recounted being struck in the head with an electronic device, an assault that caused a bleeding head wound for which medical treatment was reportedly denied. Another child told investigators that they were forced to run barefoot on a gravel driveway as a form of discipline. The children also alleged they were forced to place soiled socks in their mouths and were struck with various household objects.

During the interview process, the emotional toll on the victims became evident. One child became visibly emotional, stating, “I can’t go back to that home,” while another expressed a simple desire for a “normal life.” The children told investigators they suffered because their mother hit them and their father allowed it to happen. These accounts were corroborated by medical examinations that documented physical scars consistent with the children’s descriptions, as well as photographic evidence collected by the sheriff’s department.

Sheriff Ross Mellinger emphasized the severity of the case, noting that the children were living in a situation that inverted the natural expectations of parental protection. The sheriff stated that the findings of the investigation were deeply troubling, highlighting the importance of public vigilance and reporting when child abuse is suspected. All three children have since been removed from the Evans residence and placed in the care of state authorities. The investigation remains active as officials continue to review the physical evidence and statements collected from the home.
