Walter Koenig, Beloved Navigator Pavel Chekov on Original ‘Star Trek,’ Dies at 90

Walter Koenig, the veteran actor best remembered for portraying the steadfast navigator Pavel Chekov on the original “Star Trek” television series, has died. He was 90.

Koenig died at his home in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles, according to a statement released on Monday by his talent agent, Zachery McGinnis.

Born on September 14, 1936, Koenig became a fixture of science fiction television when he joined the NBC series during its second season in 1967. The original “Star Trek” ran for 79 episodes over three seasons from 1966 to 1969. Beyond the landmark television run, Koenig later reprised his iconic role as the earnest, Russian-accented crew member in multiple feature films that extended the franchise’s reach across generations.

With Koenig’s passing, only two marquee cast members from the original series remain alive: William Shatner, who starred as Captain James T. Kirk, and George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu.

Takei, who served as Koenig’s best man at his wedding, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram following the news, remembering his longtime colleague as a thoughtful individual and a loyal friend.

“Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades,” Takei wrote. Noting that Koenig’s September 14 birthday aligned with Takei’s wedding anniversary, he added, “I will always treasure that he and I shared that date. Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too. Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course.”
